Registering a baja in NSW

just phoned the blue slip place near work about registering my baja. he said to contact RTA Technical (1300 137 302) who said that due to it being pre ADR, the body itself is still the steel one, and the floor etc etc hasnt been modified, then all it needs to do is have a current weigh bridge ticket, and comply with the vehicle standards such as no protruding tyres, pointy bits etc etc.

too easy! ( in theory....the RTA has a habit of making up answers on the fly so we'll see....)

the problem stems from the "steel body".

Sure it still has a steel body, but it has had substantial and arguably structural modifications. The whole front and back has been hacked off the thing. :o

I'd try to find someone that knows, it sounds like the guy you spoke to didn't...

or better yet get him to put it in writing, so your insurance company can't argue the issue down the track. If you get something in writing, you'll be my new hero. :D

ok found out 2day of the rta head tec officer that a baja is classed as a modified production car/kit car and will have to have an engineers cert, theres a few places that do these i have a list of places in nsw if anybody intested, of cause u could allways regester your bug standard first then change it later but if u get pulled over and inspected u face a fine.
so a breif sumery

1-engineers cert
2-blue slip
3-rego

sound right?

as long as you dont modify the chassis and u get an engineers cert for the baja kit to show it is a legally modifyed vehicle then u will be fine.......its when u shorten the chassis to make buggys that it becomes tricky. if its a standard VW chassis then it is classed as a modifyed beetle i beleive and not a fully custom car which would require it to meet the regulations of cars being made in 2004 and not whenever your beetle was made.

yes i beleive so.....though the engine cage would count as the rear bumper i think and then most people have little nudge bars or what have you.....mines got a bullbar. look at my avatar

sgetty you are best to just fix anything on your car that is dodgy then let your engineer and blue slip officer look at it and tell you if any other things need to be addresed . The main things they will be looking for are worn suspension and steering components ,a front bumper of some kind with protection in front of the front wheels, and guards over any pullys, belts and exhaust to save those useless public from them selves

I had no problems getting mine registered WITHOUT an engineers report, as it's pre ADR's (pre '72) and I fitted normal tyres all round for rego. Going off the advice of RTA tech, and the blue slip place this is totally acceptable for a baja. their stipulation was an engine cover of some sort such as the usual cage with mesh.
