Transport SA and Engine Conversions?

Does anybody know what the regulations are regarding getting approval for larger and more powerful engines in to a vehicle in South Oz?

I'm going through that at the moment.
If I get any info that's useful, I'll be syre to pass it on.
One friend of mine got his '71 doublecab with an ej20t through no dramas. about the only thing he had to do is put an unleaded petrol filler neck in.
you have to have a swerve test and a brake test.
best thing is to make sure EVERYTHING works, ie horn, wiper washers etc.
should have no probs so long as your brakes can slow the car down. :)

Thanks vwtyp2. What engine are you proposing to have? Of course you wouldn't have already fitted it WITHOUT APPROVAL would you ;-)
I know there is another Syncro in Adelaide with an approved EJ20 in it. I want more though!
What is involved in a swerve test and a brake test?

oh, it's fitted, I just don't drive it on public roads, cos legally it's not roadworthy till it's been fully engineered, inspected, and roadworthied. :D
Dont know of a syncro, but I know of a T25 with an ej20t. another friend is putting a vr6 into his t25, and another has an Audi V5 in his.
I think in a swerve test, they just drive it slalom style through a series of witches hats, and for the brake test, I think they test that it'll stop within a certain distance from full speed.

What are you contemplating transplanting into where?

I have a 1990 Caravelle GL Syncro that I imported when I moved home to Oz after 15 years in the UK. It has air con, power steering power mirrors central locking, front and rear locking diffs and a decoupler but it DOESN't have much go!!!
I am not sure exactly what I want to put into it yet. Favoured option is probably a 2.5 SOHC Subie but I would very much like to speak to your mates who have fitted a VR6 and particularly the guy who has the V5. Do you know how much he paid for it? I am also wondering about an Audi V6.
I am coming down to Adelaide next weekend - work for Friday and have been able to delay my flight home until Sunday - so as I can go to the DOTVW down at Glenelg. Are you or any of these conversion nut mates of yours going?

Cheers,
Andy.

more than likely at least one of them is going.
Look for Alf in his Orange V5 T25, he is helping Michael vith his vr6 T25, and he also helped Kurt with his blue and white ej20t T25.
you could also speak to busman, who also posts on here. he has I think a golf 2.0 in his beige & brown T25.

Thanks. I certainly will look out for Alf - I'd love to have a look at his van.
Yeah I've met Busman. I'm looking for a bit more than what a Golf 2.0 can offer me though!

Guys, Alf has an Audi "in line" 5 cylinder in his van, not a V5.
As for approval you require an engineering approval before they even look a some engine conversions. It can be obtained from Burton & Associates (Graeme Burton).
Using the 2ltr Golf does not require any approvals or inspections, Subaru engines do (at least for some engines).

Cheers
