before i say this i must first explain that i am in no way against rat look VW's in fact some of the best bugs and buses i have seen have been
rats.......however i think that the way people are changing nicely restored cars into rust buckets so that they can say they have a rat is kinda
wrong.....if u find a bug thats under the whether and u maybe clear coat it and get some nice wheels and lower it but keep it looking ratty then thats
fine but when people take decent dubs and wreck decent panels and shiny paint with things like spray on rust or dent metal or replace panels with some
rusty ones from the wreckers to create a rat from what once was a nice looking car it pains me:cry

hey anthiron, i would agree with you on that. go and find a rat and save it accordingly, not go and dust up a perfectly good ride...

mebbe we should enlist the help of *shudder* helbus for this one
not toooo sure of the longevity of the process, but spray primer (rust red flavour), covered in matt finish to ease the porosity probs should work.
Have yet to come across a non gloss (matt) that's suitable for outdoos tho. "bondall" makes a uv resistant satin marine varnish, which
would be promising :thumb
bit of artistic license and a couple of looks at where actual rust appears would help to create the look of rust while retaining the protection from
same. Helbus?:thumb

<closes eyes, turns head and lifts nose>
I agree with the rat vehicle being made from a vehicle dragged out of somewhere. Like a rat out of a drainpipe.
This has gone too far. I am going to play with my Meguires polish range and bag of rags and clean the drivetrain & underbody of my showcar. It has
some dust on the shiny two pack paint on the suspension, and some alloy components have less than a mirror finish.
Have fun and enjoy.

You can get a very believable Rust look by using Shellac, just spray it on using a squirter bottle or even just dab it on with a brush and while it
is wet crumble some Shellac flakes over the top so they stick but will only Partially Dissolve, spray a mist of water on it as it is still wet to get
that streaking and rotting look, build it up in layers, but let each layer dry totally first.
I Started doing this to my 67 Kombie But then Changed my mind as I realised people didnt get the Joke, they just thought I had a very rusty Shitty old
Kombie, So I stopped, And as you can see in the picture, I had only done a light start on it all, If done fully, you can hardly pick it from real rust
even up close.
It will wash off with metholated spirits and a scourer or steel wool, but its hard work.
Give it a test on a scrap panel and you will see what I mean.
Cheers Tony

we sell it at my hardware store. most hardware stores should have it, in 250g, 500g or kilo bags, looks like dark yellowy brown semi transparent
flakes. mix with metho and paint on for old fashioned varnish:thumb

or you could just leave it to the elements of weather and time over a period of a few years so it is not a fabricated rat, there are some which are
made to look crap, there are some which just are crap, then there are some buses which look so mad that there is no way you could replicate it... i
think the word rat look came from a german mag, where a narly hot rat car was featured, the term rat was abrieviated from the german word Ratten'
which the article called RAT.. ?? but the word stuck and filtered throughout the world to create a style/ fad/ whatever... just like cal look/ german
look/ resto cal ect ect i'm just waiting for the tastless look to come out, i have a shed full of nasty's i could utilise
