I have a 89 syncro and have owned it for 2 yrs.Ive done alot of internet surfing hunting out syncro info and have been reading the syncro forum for

Hey,
Can you guys explain to me about the syncros. Are they just a glorified transporter with more bells and whistles or is their more to them than just
that? Are they / all of them 4WD or am I wrong about that?
What features do they have and how can you tell a syncro from other VW models?
Sorry, I cannot honestly recall seeing one or probably have a just didn't know it at the time.

The syncro was developed in conjunction with Steyr-Daimler-Puch an Austrian company that produced the Pinzgauer-6x6 truck and the Halflinger small
light wieght 4x4 as well as mopeds and bicycles.
The transporter bodies were taken from Germany to Austria to be fitted with the syncro drive parts then taken back to Germany to be finished to what
ever spec level.
They are all constant 4x4 manual 4 speed +G the G gear is a low ratio first reverse gear is also a low ratio (31:9x28:16=6.03 is what the manual
says) with a final drive of (38:7=5.43). Some came with a rear diff lock some with front and rear diff locks. The center diff is a viscous
coupling.
They are surprisingly capable off road!
Distinguishing features are, small syncro badge on the rear hatch,
syncro sticker on the l/h front under the w/screen,
petrol filler at the r/h rear not below the drivers door,
extra ground clearence,
According to production numbers there was 43,468 syncro's, only 2,108 RHD !! which makes them quite rare.

I find the synchro's really interesting and obviously Bronze does too, so it would be a pity to see the synchro 'group' branch off, why
not chat here? I'd love to hear some tech stuff on synchros and I'm sure a lot of other people would too. That breif history was great.

I'm not personally interested in buying a synchro ($$$) but I am interested in building an all-wheel-drive kombi ( ) so I'd be interested in reading any tech discussions about
synchros.

vc(viscous coupling)
I found a subaru site about their vc's come in different torque settings ie 10 Nm and 20 Nm. Is this possible for the syncro? The vc in the
syncro seems to be a bit stiff from what I have read.

I don't know much about synchros, but they operate the same way as a torque convertor for an automatic transmission. I suppose that means that
they can be customised, just like a hi-stall convertor, but I have no idea how you would get one to suit your needs. Maybe try the same guys who build
the Suby ones?
