A good place for a general introduction is:
http://www.volkswagen.org/vanagon/
and
http://www.vanagon.com/

The water-cooled (or 'wasserboxer' ) engines are good, but can suffer from coolant leaks at the head mating faces, so keep a careful eye out for puddles. There aren't that many double-cab T3s in Aus; of these, probably the most desirtable is the 'Syncro' (viscous-coupled 4WD).; of these, the most desirable is the dual diff-locked 16" wheeled variety; I think there's one in Oz; review at this address:
http://www.pps.net.au/4wdencounter/articles/vw.html

from recollection, Harding European in Brisbane handles some T3s, web site:
http://www.hardingeuropean.com/

There are some T3 guys on this forum, who no doubt will be able to give you better information. Most T3 owners are very happy with their choice.
