Late model Golf info wanted
OK, cashed up and ready to buy my babe wife a newish Golf. I had some good replies to an earlier post which gave me the go ahead to go Golf
hunting.
My questions:
I am not sure what the series 3 to 4 changes are.
Can VW cruise control be retro fitted and $$$?
Any problems to look out for.
Looking for an Auto in silver or white (cooler here in brissy) cd although I would prob upgrade to better unit/speakers as req. Want elec windows,
abs if possible, airbags & ? cruise etc. Would like tinted windows but I can get that done. Would like the factory alloys but they can be put
on.
Im also keen for any recommendation for getting servicing etc done in brissy.
Going to be a new Aussie vee dubber strapped in the back in a little while
Any tips, advice, ideas on $$$ etc read with interest.
thanks

I had a 2000 model 1.8T for three months when i was back in the uk and it was a great car.
drove really nice round town and when you opened it up it stuck to the road like glue. It came standard with abs, tints, alloy,cd,power windows, recaros
and a whole host of other goodies. It is what you would expect from volkswagen i totaly great car.
The model i had was a two door and with a rugrat it would be a bit of a pain but it had bags of room in the front for me (6.2) and it was the same for
the back. I could fit in and not have my legs shoved in the front seat and not hit the roof with my head. Cheap to run to even with my lead right
foot
All in all a great car that i think that you could not go wrong with loads of aftermarket parts are there for the taking and power upgrades are cheap
and simple (std 150 bhp with new chip 320 pounds 214 with no other mods)...
hope this helps u swing towards the golf .....

Never owned a Mk4, but a mk3, 2 and 4 1's. Know a bundle about 4's though.
Try to get a 2.0 auto, as the 1.6 is too slow. Only thing to watch for in real terms is the power window regulators. Some VWVortexers have had
experiences with coming out to their cars in the morning and finding the windows down and doors unlocked. Minor problem which can be fixed with a new
regulator.
Mk3 is pretty much bulletproof, except for the power windows which can come off their tracks which then need to be replaced. Some dodgy repairers will
tell you that the motors on the windows need replacing as well but mostly this is bollocks...
To be honest, these are the only things I have heard which commonly go wrong. Anything else is individual.
Dont write off the Vento, though, as there are more Autos available than manuals. The boot is bloody huge, and they are great cars!!! (mk3 golf with
boot.) Any way you decide within these parameters is great. The 2.0 8 valve engines regularly go past 400 000 before needing work. They are
bulletproof. ( I am maiking a generalisation, I am sure someone has known someone, but that is a random and spurious event in the big scheme. How many
times have you seen a Mk3 blowing smoke?)

Also should add that the Mk3 was really a development of the bulletproof Mk2, and carried on some common components. The Mk4 is completely new, but
carries over only the tradition of earlier golfs. Mk4 tyres will be more expensive as the wheels/ tyres are bigger. In fact running costs on the Mk4
will be a bit higher partly due to the new unrelated nature of the Mk4.

Apart from the abs, abd and map lights, so does the Mk3 GL. The Vento has all this and the same power output and torque figures from a virtually
identical engine (mk4 is cross flow). Mk3 will not keep its resale, cos the mk5 is on the way. But then they are getting to be dirt cheap!!!
What does the "sport" have over the standard 2.o SE model? (other than red sport badges which when the car is an auto, really only adds
extra weight.... heh heh...) The SE has sport seats, and I think most of the other features the sport has with a tad less pretention....
My only real point here, is Mk4s are more expensive now and will drop in the a lot in the intermediate term, where Mk3s are already cheap, and you
wont lose AS MUCH money.

Thanks for all the info guys, Im leaning towards a mk 3 as the bang for buck seems to be better as the prices seem to have dropped. 2lt is the go for
the auto.
From all on/off list info they seem bulletproof. I have started searching dealers and the trading post will get the going over this week.
Thats a nice car h2ocool, love the black but could not live with it here in qld.

Hey Rob, thats hilarious. I didnt realise that was you. I am sorry to see you gone from the tex. Crap with all that unpleasantness. Glad we can still
hang out electronically.
Koolkarma, Dont discount the Vento when looking around. You can pick them up cheaply, and they are going to be less likely to have been driven hard
cos they appealed to older drivers when they came out. The boot on them is bigger than a current Falcon or Commodore, and it isnt much longer than a
Golf. My girlfriends car looks like this. Except it has better wheels.
PS. I love Calvin & Hobbes.

Babies need prams, right? No Golf I know has a boot big enough for those ridiculous sized prams or strollers on the market today. Heh heh. Actually, I
am sure the Golf will be fine.
Hey Rob, you are missed on the tex. I hope you wont boycott our GTG at the Nats. I will keep you informed on this forum. Its really only a couple of
tossers wrecking it for everyone. If only there was a wanker site they could hang out on and abuse each other on.

Hey Rob, you are missed at Vortex. Discussed on a thread today! I think its a bit safer to come back now, as the problem has been pleasantly absent
since you bailed.
