The few minutes of Ch 10 coverage I suffered were puerile and sycophantic in the extreme; Michael Schumacher is apparently a 'genius', leaving little room at the top for scientists....

have to agree, but i did get some beauty sleep in though.
Did anyone catch the stuff up yesterday?
Just as the V8s were coming around from there warm up lap back to their grid positions they crosse over to John Bowe's car which was having a few problems.
Just as they did an audio cross they caught ol john saying "after i get around this fucking corner i will bring it in"
rather funny as the comentators ahd realised what had happened and tried to carry on in vane hoping that no-one picked it up.
Well done channel 10, love your work.

Formula one!

Bit like a very expensive game of chess.
Sure there is a lot of money being thrown around but the action is predictable and boring.
Golf looks rivetting by comparison:vader

Apart from the Ferrari thing, it was a big shakeup. Look back through the top 8 placings and the presence of BAR and Renault was encouraging, esp since they were in front of McClaren. I am a McClaren fan, and I was sad about their performance, and equally sad with Ferraris and schumies dominance!!! Very boring. Hope the next one is better.

I loved it. The Ferraris are sensational. Schumacher is the same. The commentaters are fuckwits. Fuel burn and aero are the latest buzz words. Count how many times you hear it in the 10 mins you can bear listening to them and multiply X6 then X8 at Bathurst. Some of us can remeber when the Ferraris were the prettiest and most expensive lemons going around so long may they enjoy their success I reckon...All they need on their cars now is a little more chrome

Not a bad day for a Renault fan, but the race was a little parade-ish unfortunetly, but dominance in any sport will cause that..

I had the best time dudes.

I was working for the 4 days there between turns 14, 15 & 16 as a track marshall and some of the support racing was just fuckingwell sensational!

On a different note, I went for a wander thru the F1 pits. Its cool to see that somethings dont change over the years due to rocket science that is F1.

I saw a dude sitting in the cockpit of one of the F1's pumping the brake pedal as the other mechanic bled the brakes, the old fashioned way!!

Secondly, with all the resources of the top money teams, many of them still attached the brake master cylinder bottles, plastic bottles, (except for Jordan that had schmick looking carbon fibre jobbies) with....

wait for it.....

cable ties!

I ran into (literally) Sir Stirling Moss leaning against the wheel of his beautiful old F250 Maserati blown F1 car during gridding up for the Pre-war vintage race cars. I nearly got a fat over that car! he looks kinda funny in that old helmet that looks the same as a horseriders hat except it was white!

Sniffed around a genuine type 35 and a type 51 Bugatti. These cars are worth millions!

They were running the very first production example made of the famous old blown F1 cars made by ERA in about 1924. Blown 4 cylinder with a pre-select gearbox.

The howl out of the straight out pipes from those supercharged twin cam straight 8's in the Bugatti's is not to be easily forgotten!
Not to mention some of the many front engined specials made for the Indianapolis 500 before the 2nd war, running on methanol, they were producing around 500 Hp and are still capable of well over 170 MPH around the brickyard! They look like a lot of the speeway midgets from the 70' but overgrown on steroids! They get nearly one mile to the gallon when running hard! Brave guys raced those things!

Ahhhhh the sweet smell of methanol and vegetable oil floating in the air!!!

Other things like the massive old Blower Bentley and this other behemouth with a Miller aircraft engine in it!! Good lord, these are serious sized cars that would comfortably sit four across in the seats!!
These guys just didnt toddle around for the benefit of the spectators but bloodywell raced flat out for it, regularly running off the track, sledging like mad and laying big black cookers from the old skinny cheese cutter treaded tyres!!!

Next to remember and savour was the old Appendix J cars, Now called group Nb and Nc which covers 1959 right thru now to 1974.
One of the Fastback Mustangs had a pretty tricky 351 Windsor producing nearly 600Hp.
The 2 Mopar 6 paks that did the most amazing slides and left a long pair of 14" wide cookers out of turn 15,
Brockie behind the wheel of that luscious Purple XU-1 that his son built,
the old vomit green XY GTHO Ph 3 that simply blew the doors offen everything else untill of all things, an ignition coil failed.....Jezuss that car was fast! It simply shreadded those huge tyres it wore!
The barking gaggle of Minis and those 3 screaming old 1500 Cortinas chasing each other madly lap after lap inches apart.
The bellowing Y-block 289 Mustangs wailing at nearl 8500rpm...............350 Chev powered HQ's...all of them bellowing, backfiring and flaming out the pipes....stinking of burnt avgas, fuck it was good.

Not to mention those mad dudes in the GT3 Porches!
What an amazing howl out of those atmo 6 cyl boxer engined Stuttgardt machines. They were barely a second and a half outside the V8's and were a full 200 less HP.

V8 supercars....Ho hum! Yawwwwn!
At least that arrogant twat Skaif got center-punched and unloaded...twice, bwaaahahahaha, much to the delight of just about every official there that has had the dubious pleasure to deal with him personally!

F1's yeah, I tend to agree, a bit of a yawn as far as a race spectacle but the note those things make, particularly from the BAR Hondas, certainly gets your serious attention when I could nearly reach thru the fence and touch them as they flashed past right up against the barrier!!!

They sure smell strange tho, must be some brew of jungle juice they run on I gotta say. Quite a few different brews as well.

They showed some of the real-time data logging on the screens where the needle was just nudging 19,000rpm during qualifying!!! Dudes, thats a lot of revs out of a 3.5 litre V10!

I have to say I have never been so foot-sore and fatigued being on the go for 12 hours with perhaps 3 or 4 chances to sit for about 15 minutes and after the second day I was determined to go home and to fucking hell with all of them, I have aggravated an old knee injury and stirred up the surgery I have had on my back 7 years ago but I will be back there again with bells on next year come hell or high water.
Pay your own transport there, start at 06.30 and still have to pay for a fucking coffee, finish about 1800, cant park within 10 kays of the circuit, you dont get paid jack, you get a paper bag with a tiny lunch that would barely feed an Ethiopian and a couple of tins of fizzy drink, a peice of fruit and a biscuit and mineral water to last 12 hours. Trudge up and down sun and wind burnt in the 37 degree heat of thursday but I would go straight back tomorrow again such was the comeraderie of the crew and just the totsal experience of it. :jesus

Difficult to explain unless you have been there really. This coming from a long time competitor used to the other side of the fence and waving to the officials at the end of the race.

Just to top it off, because I was a last minute inclusion for the event, I was unasble to get any accommodation on the ferry so was forced to sleep on the floor rather than those blasted cruise seats.....

Roll on 2005, I'd swim back across if I had to!
I for one cannot wait!

Sounds like painfull fun

I am a Ferrari fan and spent 20 years watching them drive like shit until Schumacher arrived. he is a genius.

take away all driver aids and the contest will be even more one sided. Just look what happens in the rain. Everyone slips and slides everywhere & Schumacher just powers away.

Last years championship was pretty good only decided in the last rounds with lots of close racing. If only they could overtake again.

Interesting comment made. For a V8 supercar to have the same power toi weight ratio as an F1 they would need 2200hp, the mind boggles

Starbuggy.
It sure was dude!
Cams is always looking for dudes to act as spectator marshalls and no prior motorsport experience is necessary. Just apply and they will happily accept!
You get in for the 4 days but you suffer and starve but its worth every effort!!

I would love to see the traction control removed as well sos the drivers really have to drive, just like the Cart cars.

Witness how entertaining those machines are to watch. heavier, more powerful and just a big balls machine!!
Plus they run on methanol which just about runs in my veins!!! LOL
