Building a type IV, Where to start?
Alright, Im gunna do it. I know NOTHING about building an engine, but I want to stick a type IV in my bug, so damn it, I'll make it myself. The
plan is to buy a bit at a time, and slowly do it over a year. I've found a friend's big garage for me to work in (it was out the back of his
house), and I've bought the book on type IV conversions from aircooled.net. Try and stop me now! Actually it's more like try and start me
now, and when the engine's built it will be "try and start IT now". Anyway, I'll get the book within a week. What do I buy first?
I plan on keeping my current type 1 engine as it is, and selling it after a year (It's done about 20,000 Ks since it was built), so I'll be
buying everything unless you think there's a more economical way to do it. On top of all that I want it to be around 2.5 litres so who do I get
to do all the necessary work etc... Also how big can I legally go? Anything you can think of, shoot.
Over to you....

Good on ya Oasis, for having a go.
There are some good testamonials at STF and MassIVe.
That'll free up a half a day every month or so (no more 5000km services)

Bill
Give us a call at work
Lost my mobile
Need to have a drink with ya!
You shold come round and see Richard soon.
He has a couple of 2.7L's on stands nearing completion.
Hope you have deep pockets.
No REAL need for a 2.5+L
You can get 2.3L with a stock 66mm crank and 103's (hmm or is it 105's??)
It is the stroker type $ crank that costs money. And lots of it.
A decent 2.3L will scare the pants off ya!
and decent type 4 heads will scare the pants off you when you find out the $$$
This motor will easily cost what you paid for your car.

Would be worthwhile to buy the TypeIV rebuild video from aircooled.net - I bought it and it is a valuable resource for such a rebuild, takes you
through step by step.
Although I didn't assemble the engine myself, I have been involved in the rest of the build of my TypeIV which is going into my bug. I tried
copying the tape for someone else once but it didn't work (something to do with different format for the US tapes (speed) - I could watch it but
not dub it).

So whats the deal with these US tapes, can you purchase an OZ format tape? or do you have to get one of those proffesional mobs to copy it for you?

No need to convert - I ordered it from US and could view it no probs on my video. I'm not up to speed with the technical side but I think the
long play/short play (different speeds) is what may be different. Our video has both, but the video I tried to used to copy only had one therefore
didn't dub it properly.
Not a good explanation as I don't know much about it sorry.

I'm going to be honest with u Bill, stick some webers or dells on your existing 1916, spend some money on heads and a bigger cam & I think
that u would be more than happy with it.
Just a thought, don't mean to put u off.
regards
Jak

I sort of agree with you Jak. I just like the idea of something different, and lots of torque. I sent you a u2u with a couple of questions.

Well Danny Boy, Let me think about your offer for a few years while I build a few engines... Sounds like you know what's inside my
engine:alien
