type 4 gearbox's

hey
just a little question.
i have currently a 1600 motor and gbox running in the 72 panel. I have a spare 1800 motor and 1700 gbox im wondering if there is any gain in putting in the 1700 gbox when i put in the 1800 motor?
is it worth it?
cheers
rhys
p.s. whats the strongest kombi box is it a 6 rib 2L?

Hi rhys
the 1700 gbox has the same final drive as the 1600 I think it is slightly stronger but you know its good and its already in there so might be easier to leave the 1600 box in there

From what I have heard, the kombi CV flanges are different, so although the gearbox mounting points arent too different (I think) you would have to make up custom driveshafts or change the outer CV's as well.

When I had my V8 kombi, it only had a 1600 gearbox in it. The clutch was hammered, but the gearbox was still good. Treat it right and they are surprisingly strong.

The type 2 1600/1700 are both the 3-rib gearbox. They both already use the bigger kombi CV's.

For more info read this

it's a very good site

The 1600 & 1700 gearboxes do not have the same final drive.
The 1600 has 8 teeth on the pinion and 43 teeth on the crownwheel giving a final drive ratio of 5.375:1
The 1700 has 7 teeth on the pinion and 38 teeth on the crownwheel giving a final drive ratio of 5.43:1.
Therefore fitting the 1700 gearbox will increase the revs at 100km/h
