Axel Tramp
What causes this?
A friend of mine got a new engine and is suffering from this its a rebuilt 1600 putting out roughly 70hp. The engine too strong for the engine?
Could the clutch be set too stiff?
Its very noticable in reverse:cussing
What can solve this.... i want to help my mate out:beer

The question has me thinking --- but I think you should check the bend in the flexible clutch tube(the one between the pan and the trans) You need
about 40mm bow in it.

had this problem in the spare bug. I was the engine mounts, ther were shot!!!
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Are you talking about axle tramp under power or the clutch chattering ?
If its rear wheels then it is due to frame horns flexing, he needs a traction bar under the rear of the engine,

"Axel Tramp" sounds like the name of a porn star. Your Axle Tramp, however, is likely to be caused by mountings, especially the gearbox mountings,
being worn.
I say "likely" because you have observed that it is very noticable in reverse. When in reverse, the clutch operates as it does in forward gears, so
there is no reason for it to be worse, therefore probably not the clutch ('though a savage clutch can highlight the problem). In reverse, the torque
application is different, so this would show up a problem with the gearbox mountings.

Yeah i think its probably the gearbox mounts too, does the gearstick move forward/backward at all when under accelleration/decelleration? this is a
sign that the nosecone mount is shot.
Chattering when you dump the clutch is a symptom of a mis-adjusted bowden tube or rooted mounts. The tranny twists on the frame horns and pulls on the
clutch cable, if there isnt enough sag in the bowden tube it will pull it enough to disengage the clutch - which causes the tranny to go back to its
resting position, if there is still torque from the motor, it will happen over and over which causes chatter.
This is pretty bad for the tranny and driveline as it is constantly loading and unloading everything.
I doubt that a traction bar is needed for a 70HP 1600.
check the sag on the bowden tube and check the mounts

check the sag in the bowden tube, its a bit difficult to access - It is adjusted by stacking washers between the tube and a bit where it attatches to
the tranny.
I am guessing it is most likely the bowden tube, check to see if the mounts are properly tightened. The only other reason that it "might" chatter
is that if the frame horns are really tired, its really unlikely though.
check the sag on the tube and make sure there is at least an inch. Its ok if there is more than that.

FWIW I managed to trash a diff with a 1600 due to axle tramp, but maybe thats just me !!!
You are all right on the mounts thing, took me a while to work that out...

If all the gearbox mounts are good then get your self a Berg rear axle tramp bar.
This will elimate the axle hope I have one on my Stock 1500 for the drags. No tramp anymore.

If your friend is dumping the clutch in reverse, stand by with another gearbox...
