removing brake adjusters??????
hey
i have to remove the brake adjuster setup on the rear brakes as the adjusters have completely stuck and cant adjust them. i have taken out the 2 bolts
that hold it on but it seems to be stuck right in the middle somehow??????? is it welded on there or whats the trick? says in manual it should just
slide straight out?
any ideas?

The adjuster housing is usually WELDED onto the backing plate in most VW s i have seen
I am sure this is the case with a Kombi as well.
Use a hammer n screwdriver or cold chisle to tap them off n out of the housing..
use some penetrene as well for a few days
when re installing them make sure they turn freely and lubricate with some molly grease..

thanks dave do u think it will tear the backing plate? and if i buy a new whole adjuster set will i have to weld it on?

can i use the oxy to heat up the weld and pick it off? is that the easiest way?

You dont have to take off the adjuster housing only the BRASS or sometimes steel adjusters that go into each end of the housing.
yes use a little heat but try some penetrene as well.
From memory there blind holes on a kombi so you will have to chisle them out probally, soaking does wonders together with a little heat
try not to stuff them cause you might have to hunt around for new or good S/H ones. which may be hard to find.

hey
yer i think instead of pulling the whole block off ill just heat up where the adjusters sit into it where there stuck! i have soaked them for the
lkast 2 nights and still nothing!

Oi Rhys,
slow yourself down. You are about to create a horrible mistake that could render your rear brakes useless.
The rear adjusting 'stars' are composed of three elements
- the screw that butts against the brake pad and goes up and down
- the star that moves the screw up and down (adjustable)
- and the housing for the star.
Believe me, you dont want to take the housing off the backing plate, that's just plain silly. If your adjusting screws are stuck, here's
what I do.
Remove drums, shoes and springs.
Get a pair of vice/multi grips and latch onto the star. Try and wiggle it back an forth.
When it starts to move, try and wiggle it out. If you cant, put a flathead screwdriver underneath and gently hammer it out of the housing.
Once out, unscrew the screw from the star and grease everything (axle grease) I also lightly sand the cylinder on the star, so when it is reinserted,
it does not stick.
Make sure it spins easily when back in the housing. Done

hey
i am going to take off the whole backing plate as it will be easier to work with the adjusters (im not gonna remove them know thanks tnate) the
problem is i cant move them or get hold of them properly (without braking the adjuster stars) so i think a little heat will do the trick!

Rhys yes as Tnate says SLOW down and do the job properly.
I assumed you had already removed the backing plates.
try not damange them to much as there hard to find now.

Hi
The best way to remove them is to give them a good soak in WD40 etc and then get a fairly long 10 mm bolt and just keep winding it in, it will bottom
out and then start pushing the adjuster out.

wish you had told me that earlier i have tried everything on these
adjusters (have them off the backing plate) and heated them up tapped at them soaked them everything!
