If it is an early beetle, just hack saw through the handle in 2 places just above where the handle meets the body, then screw the remaining bit of the handle off the bolts that hold the latch in place.

EMPI Man,

73 "L" 1303S Beetle....
No, You can't do that as the button stops the lower half of the handle turning around...
You have to get at the locking mechanism under the locking catch on the body...
I was lucky with My 1968 beetle as i had the 3 inspection plates off and managed to unlock it thru one of those, when I accidently locked My bonnet before I had adjusted it...
Best of Luck...
HOLD EVERYTHING... I just had a look at My handle...
if You cut the handle just above the button, that is where the lower bolt is located... also cut the handle about an inch higher than that... Now You can unscrew the top section of the handle, and the small piece above the button has to be unscrewed also... You may have to angle grind the button piece out of the way so You can unscrew the small piece of handle.. ... the button piece just sits there until the other 2 pieces have been undone.... and the whole assembly inside comes off the bonnet...
I hope You can understand My directions.. if Not, let Me know and I could do a drawing for You...
regards

Lee Noonan -- 11.50pm

If you un bolt the box type thing under the front stone tray and take it out you can knock out the round plate on the bottom of the spare tyre well in and push the spare tyre up and put your hand in and try to open the latch by hand where the cable used to be.It could also help if you got someone to push bown on the hood while you do it. Gary.
