mmm
3 Rib are 1600 Kombi
5 Rib are 1800 Kombi and
6 Rib are 2L kombi also called 091 box's
They aren't really from any YEAR as such as they came out all over the place. Generally the later bays had the 6 rib. They are 4 speed but you can
get some cable shifted 5 speed boxes from the later vanagons but they are week as piss

another thing that gives the 091 away (i think) is that the ribs are rounded rather than at 45 deg on the corners.HTH
if its a kombi and its going too slow, just relax its having a go!

2l and 1600 both have rounded corners on the bottom of the box 1800 has diagonally squared off corners. just count the ribs that are similar width.
hope this helps.

Well, having looked at those photos (many thanks Andy) I now can see that the spare gearbox I've been saving up in the shed to put in the Kombi Ute
with my reco-ed 2.0l engine is actually a 1600 gearbox ! This might sound pretty stupid, but is it a bad idea to use a 1600 box, with a 2.0l engine ?
Are the 1600s more fragile inside ? Does the 1600 box even bolt up to a 2.0l engine ?

The 1600 and 1800 and in fact the beetle ones as well will bolt to a 2L kombi motor. The 2l box has a different bellhousing and starter to the rest.

Does the 2ltr Motor have a larger Flywheel than the 1.8ltr?
Also does the 2ltr Motor have a different 'offset' or something like that on its flywheel teeth for the 2ltr Box to have a different starter motor?

I had a 1600 box bolted to my 2 litre and it was fine. When I blew up the engine I put a 2 litre box in. I think if you are going to put a gearbox in
you may as well put a 2 litre in. You will probabley wish you did down the track.
However, most lifted kombi's prefer to run the 2 litre engine with the 1600 box.

When using different engine and gearbox combinations, you just gotta ensure the input shafts match the engine.
Basically, beetle boxes and 1600 3-rib kombi boxes use a short beetle input shaft. This is cos the pilot bearing is in the crank gland nut.
The 1700 3-rib, 1800 5-rib and 2000 6-rib were used with type 4 engines, and as such had a long input shaft. This is cos the type 4 pilot bearing is
deeper in the engine, in the crank itself.
So swap the input shafts to suit the motor you want to use.
The 2lt flywheel is the same OD and has the same teeth as any other 12V flywheel. The difference is the 2lt pressure plate is very big in OD. This
requires the additional clearance inside the 2lt bellhousing to work. The starter is also different, in that the one-way clutch behind the gear is
spaced back about 10-15mm to clear the big OD pressure plate.
and check out this link for a description of the boxes;
