Plumbed oil cooler Q

I'm about to install an external plumbed in oil cooler to my Formula Vee 1200 motor and I have a question.

Can I use one of the generic oil coolers that you can buy at supacheap or repco that are sold as transmission coolers for $80, or do I need to spend the big bucks and buy a Earls type cooler for $280??

thanks in advance
