NATS DRAG RESULTS

Just wondering if we could all post our best results from saturday. NOT to get into any debate about 1916 and strokers and turbos or anything, I just want to see how my results at different stages compare with others. ET is only part of the story yes? So combining all my cards the best figures for each point are:
60' 2.091
330' 6.096
660' 9.491
mph 71.61
1000' 12.453
ET 14.975
MPH 88.51
kmh 142.45

Up to 660 foot mark the results come from my 2nd run (which was 15.16@87), the others come from my 1st run. 1 second slower than I wanted to be.

14 seconds for my little 1.9 litre oval. Woopee.

As for drag racing: it's fun in the first two gears and then I just look forward to the corner leading to the return road. I chased Jon Vanlook through there in his orange supercar oval and he got told off by the marshalls and I didn't ha, ha.

It was also fun lining up against other ovals in 3 of my 6 runs.

My worst time was a 16 flat when I forgot how to change gear. My best time is below.

60' 1.939
330' 5.922
660' 9.340
mph 71.69
1000' 12.346
ET 14.959
MPH 85.57
kmh 137.71

It was a really well organised and fun event. Well done and thanks to Dave Birchall and Club Veedub.

I forgot how to change gears too. On one run I tried to push the stick forward going from 1st to 2nd. Didnt do it just once, had 3 goes at it. Drag racing aint my thing either. If I can get out and the legs havent turned to jelly from adrenaline overdose it cant be good. Still OK for a once a year thing though.

The only time the officials gave me any grief was after my first run and I wasnt sure where the track ended... so kept racing right up towards the hairpin. Must have been doing about 180-190.

Just found some old time cards for my engine combo.

1994 From Willowbank running in the kombi with the old Haltech that I kept blowing the MAP sensor out of...

60' 2.226
ET 15.187
MPH 88.72
KPH 142.79

1995 Running E6 Haltech on Eastern Creek in kombi...
60' 2.042
ET 14.648
MPH 82.40
KPH 132.61
Figures are out a bit cos that was with backing off and still broke out.

1998 At Adelaide International in fastback. Wasnt running too well, backfiring and stuff.
60' 1.915
330 5.619
660 8.783
MPH 76.94
1000' 11.548
ET 13.908
MPH 94.64
I've been lying for years. I thought it was 13.8, but nevermind.

So what gives with these latest times? I think the engine and driver combo must be getting old.

Hey Chris,

I'm glad somebody else gets out of the car with Jelly legs too. I've had the shakes at oran park (lots of walls to hit and the dog leg) and the Bulladeligh Hillclimb (35 km posted corners at 130kmph).

Here are my engine specs as requested.

My engine is a 1915 (not 1916 to avoid controvercy)
69mm Sabadusi Crank
1.25:1 rockers std vw
Stan Pobjoy 37/68 cam
Old cracked unported 044 heads with 40 x 3? valves
1 5/8 berg merged header
Home made 2 inch exhaust system
44 IDF webers on short manifolds
009 dizzy (still with too much advance 6-32)
CDI ignition kit from Dick Smith

The strength in this engine at the moment is it's state tune. It's absolutely on song thanks to hours of fiddling and a few dyno runs at CBB. It's about 90hp at the wheels.

14.9 in the fastback is a good effort. There is a lot more weight there than in a bug. Any idea what yours weighs at?

Can you post your first run details up to 60foot mark? I like to see what happened for the whole race.

Was it on your third line up that you lost your gear? (1,2,3 or 4th)?

60' 2.116
330' 6.125
660' 9.508

Im guessing it is heavier than a stock fastback.
Although I have removed the back seat and passenger seat, they have been replaced by aluminium sheet. The heavier weight of kombi engine and gearbox + turbo and intercooler, big torsion bars and sway bars. Adds up pretty heavy I guess. No excuses though, it should be faster than what it did on saturday. Starting to think it is probably time to rebuild it. Poor thing has a had a hard life. When I get rich I will get Leigh to build me an engine.

1st run 14.975 @ 89
2nd run 15.1 @ 87
3rd run was 16.5 @ 79 cos of my gearshift brain fade.
4th run was 15.4 @ 84 when I decided that the only way I was going to get consistent repeatable times would be to shift at 5000rpm.
lining up for 5th run, 1st gear BANG rattle rattle headlight drop out after axle hop in the burnout. cest la vie

Sorry to hear about the gears. It seems to have been a common problem. I drove up from Melbourne to watch, missed the qualifying and went to the eliminations. So few cars made it through unscathed.

Saw the white fastback on the trailer. Would have liked to see it run. Try to sort it out for next year, I will be bringing mine up to play then as well.

Need more quick type 3's out there.

My best run was ..
reation time .164
60'..........1.846
330'........5.450
660'........8.475
mph........81.47
1000'......11.101
ET...........13.381
mph.........96.98
For some reason the mph was the slowest on this run, they were all around the 99-100 mph, I may have backed off early looking for the finish line, I'm used to running 1/8 mile. events!!

My car ran nice all day, didn't have a spot of trouble and was lucky enough to take out the top 8 VW trophy, and best reaction time, It was a .004, when I was paired up against Lee Harris in his turbo car, he red lit with a -.031 very close.

which is what it should do, cooler air = denser air= more oxygen to burn= more power = lower et

Yeah density should influence engine performance, but I was surprised there would be a such a significant change in et Vs temp. Daves VW for instance was doing 20s and was on the button every run and did not appear to be so temp/density sensitive.
I wonder if it has something to do with heat soak in the engine and that an aircooled engine not only gets hotter quicker but also dissapates heat faster between runs with a lower engine core temp?

I think it also has a lot to do with how well you know the engine.

Look what Terry did in the Duece. He had 12 runs and was on the money with every run. That 427 holds a lot of heat but he was also starting and switching off the engine at times - keeping it happy regarless of the ambient air temp.

Do I have a theory for my car??? It spat the fan belt off in the first burnout and since it was the very same fanbelt that was going to power the headlights of the kombi on the way home, I just ran without it. There is a voltage correction map in my EFI so I didnt think it would make any difference, but maybe it didnt like running on 12V or less and wanted 14 or whatever it is the alternator puts out.
