what engines can be fitted into a '76 golf
has anyone fitted a Nissan SR20DET or a toyota 4agez into a MK I golf or is it possible to fit the new 1.8L turbo engines from a newer golf,
Just trying to figure out what will be the easiest to fit as I'm on a limited budget and would appreciate any advice you could give

just a rumour but ive heard that 76' golf engines go straight in with no problems :P

ah pure genius at work, sorry should have been more specific for the lowest common denominator, I would have thought that asking about 3 forced
induction and fuel injected engines in the engine conversion forum would have shown that I wasn't interested in fitting a stock 1.6L.

have a look for 2 magazines from your newsagent
1. The GOLF and
2. Performance VW mag
both are from the UK and will have what you are looking for in terms of a vw transplant.
one question though, why are you looking at motors other than a vw motor for your Golf?

The standard 1.6 litre that comes in the golf doesn't seem to be much good, It has been rebuilt 4 times in the last 10 years
by a few different VW specialists including both of the guys the WA VW club say are the best in WA and has never run right or lasted long, it's had
the carby changed all new wiring and still no luck.
And before anyone says the driver is killing the engines my now 56 year old mother was driving the car the entire time and my grandmother drives
harder, lol
The car has sentimental value as it was converted and done up for my mother by my father a couple of years before he died.
The car has been locked in my grandfathers garage for the last 3 years waiting for a new motor and I finally have the time to tackle it.
So I'd like to get something fuel injected that will run without the constant hassles so my mother can drive it, and would like to give it a bit more
power for myself and my brother to enjoy.

hey dude
might want to try the 1.8L GTI engine for that extra bit of power!!!!
things to consider when doing a conversion are:
cost
practicality
gearbox that will withstand the power
if turbo where to mount the intercooler
if water cooled where to run the radiator and what size radiator
your general skills to fit it or the cost to pay somone to fit it
plus many many more things!!!

2.0 straight out of a mkIII 2E is the best, and run it with twin well tuned 45mm webers and hold on!...Or how about a 16v from GTI imports and run it
on pure LPG...no stuffing around with ECU`s that way and believe me...hang on

from what i ahve been told the mark 3 2 litre is not a good engine if you want to rev it hard. it also produces only 5hp more than the 1.8 GTI
motor.
and also if money permits go for fuel injection, dont waste your time and money with carbs.

What model does the fuel injected 1.8L gti motor come out of
and what are my chances getting it to fit into a MK1?

there are 2 types of fuel injected motors from the mark 2 golf. the early ones were mechanical type injection, therefore requiring no ECU, whereas the
late ones 89 to 92 where digifant injection which is the same setup basically as todays fuel injected cars, that is it has an ECU.
both motor will fit straight into a mark 1 golf as the motor uses the same mounting points.
try Brian from GTI IMPORTS in Sydney as he carries these motor and others which may be a better option depending on what you want.

Do yourself a favour and get yourself either a 1.8 F/I engine out a Golf MKIII or , budget permitting the 2.0 Golf MKIII engine (ADY or AGG). Anything
else is a waste of time.
The 1.8 is cheap and last's 30000kms to 500000kms no problem at all.
The 2.0 is just about the same but a be it more to buy. Both bolt right in and fit the gearbox. if you have enough money get yourself a 5 speed to go
with that.
Engines are available everywhere. Call Volkstorque in Adelaide. He has heaps of low kms 1.8's at very good prices (and complete with all the bits you
will need for the convesion).
If you like something hot go for the Audi/VW 1.8 20V engine or the 1.8 turbo. Harder to install and heaps more to buy.
Or, the ultimate, but heaps of work, the VR6. It's been done in Europe but it's hard and cost's lot's.
