I need to do my first oil change on my syncro. What is the best oil to use in a wasserboxer.? :bounce

I have always used Valvoline XLD in mine,

I did try Castrol FMX synthetic and it made a lifter tap for 30 seconds or so when you left it sitting for a couple of days.

nahh, I either take it down to the local garage and dump it in their waste oil bin, or the oil collection point at the garbage depot.

dont pour sump oil into the ground it contaminates the ground! same with the sewer
most rubbish dumps (if not check in the yellow pages under waste oil) collect waste oil just put it back into an old oil container and take it there so it can be recycled
(they filter it and reuse it

That seems a little emotional, Ben. We all know Laws is a sell-out, but won't refusing to touch anything he promotes soon leave us with very few choices of what to buy?

As for your recommendation of a synthetic; I know you're an experienced engine-builder, please share your experiences of long-term use of sunthetics. I use some synthetics in the course of my work (non-auto,) and they're fantastic - nearly as good as the American hype; but I've heard of some concerning reports. Many have complained of leakage (could be understandable on an engine with a few miles - modern multi-grade oils are designed to have a low viscosity and maintain it through a greater temperature range - synthetics are supposed to carry this technique further, hence they'll fit through gaps an old oil won't,) some claim they can't obtain sufficent oil pressure at low RPM and other(s) that synthetics don't absorb as much heat as mineral oils. The major component of every synthetic oil I've been able to obtain data on is an oil I use on the job, and it contains a number of health warnings - mostly on not breathing the vapours if it is burnt or heated above 200C.

As I said, I've found modern synthetics to be great in less strenuous conditions - I'd love to read your experiences with the VW ('cos I'd love to learn they'll help - bugger the cost.)

Castrol GTX Magntech - One Hell of an Oil - I said that ... NOT Lawsie.... lol


I am going to use Castrol Magnatech in My 68 1600sp when It gets on the road..... It seems to be very good... and its not Synthetic..... I used to agree with most things Lawsie said... until I found that He was being paid Big $$$$ to promote them.... and Toyotas were "the Best Cars" and Valvoline was the best Oil....and Yet He drove a Mercedes sports car to work!!!! and I'll bet it didn't have Valvoline in its Engine.... and the Princess uses a Vax vacuum cleaner.... I'll bet Mrs Laws Doesn't use any Vacuum Cleaner..... at all..:D:D:puke

Hi

I use Mobil 1 in my WBX, I dont have anyway to tell if its doing the right thing or not.

In about 1988 there was a comptetion to win a new VN Commodore and jetski if you bought some XLD, I bought some XLD for my TS Passat, dont laugh it was a good car, it suddenly started to use oil, when it all burnt away I put some Mobil Superdrop in and the oil burning stopped, my friend with a 4.9 VL had the same thing happen.

The motor looks like it belongs to carnie folk, you know; small hands, smell like cabbage.
