steering box open holes!

I have a '63 bug, with I guess a worm & roller steering box. Top of box has 4 bolts holding the cover down, a nut around the adjusting screw, but two gaping holes deep enough for me to think these are for topping up with 90weight. BUT should there be some kind of caps to stop grit and dirt going in? Should I just overfill, hopefully washing out the old crud and just leave them open or does someone think there should be caps / have ideas on what to plug the holes with (and I don't see any thread at the entrance to these holes).
Anyone with the same? Thanks.

Hi

Originally there were plastic bungs in the holes. If you want to clean it out take it off and flush it with kero.

re steering box

sounds reasonable. Do they sell them still (or will I be cutting shapes in old tires ;-)?
Next time I'm at a parts place I can check...
Thanks for the pointer
