What starter motor to use?
I'm not sure what the stock T1 compression ratio is, but the EJ20 n/a has 9.7:1. I've read on the vanagon forum and a few other places that the
stock T1 starter motor isn't up to the task.
What are you guys using?

CBB use a reduction starter motor that they fabricate in their exotic conversions.
I believe they have sent them out to people with V6s, V8s etc.

Ok I've found some more options:
1. WES wrote somewhere to use a battery with a higher cold cranking amps rating, I think he's using a 520CCA battery with a stock T1 starter for his
V6 conversion.
2. Another option is to use a semi-auto starter, as per this thread. http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=66664

I actually using a stock 2lt starter, which I think has the same motor part as the type 1 starter, or similar power anyway.
It cranks my 10:1 2.5lt V6 no problems. I do think having a decent size battery helps, I have a 520cca or somewhere around there.
A number of places in australia sell the hi-torque starters. I didn't want to go that way if I didn't have to, cos I didn't want to break or damage
my ring gear (which is set-up in a weird way that it wouldn't be as strong as the stock set-up).

starter options
I hear 911 Porsche starters from 79 to 84 fit straight into bus boxes and I now Bosch are now making hi-torque direct replacement starters for all
other VW's. You should see these things....TINY! About the size of a coffee cup. Apparently they make just one motor now for all cars and then stick
the appropriate drive to fit what every car!
That said, we have run a stock T1 starter with a RS turbo engine. Not sure of the comp ratio, though suspect around stock VW or simiar!
Not much help I know!

How can you tell the difference between a stock starter and one from a semi-auto?
In this link, the standard one is on the left and the auto one is on the right. The standard one has the shaft extending out past the gear and has a
bush fitted

You are correct Jenny.....Are you running a Bus box are T1 IRS?
If UR running a bus box, at the very least I would look at the post 86 bus starter, but I can get a 911 starter secondahnd for $250 here in
Perth.....
Loads more torque than the standard VW starter.
As for the new Bosch mini starters Mike......
Your FLVWS should be able to get one for you, otherwise try Tooleys in Sydney....
I think they import them.

Im pretty sure that the semi auto is the same as a 911 starter.
The stock starter is .7 bhp, the auto is .8 bhp
