how far should i b able 2 advance me dizzy

just a question gang

69 t3 with a vacuum and centrifical dizzy

i have advanced the timing to around 10 degrees btdc . the third notch on the fan wheel and it is running fine no pinging
i could probably take it further

when it is on the first notch btdc it burns too much fuel ...black smoke ... and is sluggish

could the dizzy be put in wrong. it has been changed recently ????

or can i just do the old "advance it till it pings then take it back a bit " trick.

:(

If your talking a stock distributer with vacume advance diaphram attached you want to be setting the timing to about 7 degrees, which is the notch to the right of the two notches when you are looking in your engine bay.

If you are using a mechanical advance distributer like a 009, you want to set your timing to around 13-15 degrees. This will help eliminate the 009 flatspot problem. Make sure its not pinging when you take it for a test drive and all should be ok.

As for the black smoke, it sounds like your running rich. You need to balance your carbs, and re-set your idle mixture. If that still doesn't work, your going to need to check float levels and check your needle and seats for leakage. Is fuel visably running into the carbs at idle? etc.

Probably the best thing you could do is buy a VW guide for the complete idiot book. Regardless of how much knowledge you obtain about vw's, its probably the greatest reference book written.

Good luck,

Ian.

I think you'll find the two notches to the right of the other - it's the TDC mark. The next two should be 7.5 and 10 degrees (I don't know why they put it there, but in the old days of unleaded, you could safely run it for a small increase in power.)

Although you are not hearing pinging, a sign of too much advance is a "flat spot" around the start of the cam's effective range - for a stock cam this will occur from approx 1800 - 2800, depending on what cam and heads. Some people find a steep hill and climb it, advancing the timing until they hear a ping, then backing off 4 degrees, but I don't think you'll find any useful improvement past 10 with a stock engine. If it's a 1500 taken to 1600 without spacers, you might want to head back toward stock - unless a little more power is more important than a long living engine. :D
