one piece windows
please, i need some responses from people out there who have fitted them to their cars or know cars with them in
i know that they wont be as good as the originals, but i want some feedback from people out there as to rattles, leaks (water and air seals), etc.
any feedback please people...

I had them fitted in my old red oval, I spent a lot of time making them work, re doing the late model regulator so the glass ran up and down in the
rear runner properly.
They were ok, but now I just stick with standard 1/4 windows, not worth the trouble.

these are best installed in a semi-automatic beetles here in Australia..
as these, and i THINK the 1974 onwards beetles are the only ones with IRS, and double banded hand - window winders.. the irs and whatnot were not
available in the aussie beetles untill 74.. and the semi-auto's are all german imports that came with these features..
the double banded window winders are needed to support the weight of the single pane of glass.. this is what one of the boys at Volkspower told me
when he noticed i had a semi-auto...
if you are running power windows, go for it.. but you may have the same trouble Dave did..
i think they look cool!, heard theyre a bit pricey though.. and take the original look away.. BUT replacing everything for the quater window is also
pricey and time consuming..

Done a few
I`ve fitted a few sets before, but they take time to set up and its hard to find good twin lifters now.
I had them in my 76 and used them for over 10 years and never had a problem.
But I`m more for 1/4 vents now to.
Only thing with them is the rubberscrappers never met with the ends as good as one would hope.
They still look nice.
Everything 36HP !

Check out this website. James, the guy that own's the bug from hell, has documented most of his build up and has detailed the instructions for
fitting single piece windows.
His car is worth a look too. Its a real show stopper with tons of custom work, not to mention a 250+ Hp turbo engine.

thay are very hard to install well and keep the rain out I bought a set to put in my bug after painting but looking at it and the changes needed to
the door (69 bug) I took them back in exchange for west coast rubbers and baily channels which cost more than twice as much as the window kits but the
end result is a dry car. Also if you look in any USA vw mag you will see very few cars with one peice windows the trend seems to be leaveing the
windows as standard a change from 10 years ago.

I've got em and often wish I had a quarter window to let some air in, as there is no ventilation without the window down. That said, I think they
look great, and they were already on the car.

Installation usually takes a good 8 hours if you have done them before. Its not easy to set up... WOFTAM stick with stock or fit power window
drives, if you want to enhance

I also had them on the car when I got it. I miss the 1/4 windows for the air. Have gone through two dual lift regulators, although all pre 67 bugs in
the states seem to run dual lift regulators for some odd reason. They are hard to get here though....
I need a drivers side one if anyone has one...

One of the locals here had them in His 76 Beetle for a year then converted back to the 1/4 windows...
Very little ventilation in the summer... Many of the outside scrapers don't look original... straight instead of wrapping around on the ends...
seems to be a dying fad...
I wouldn't do it... Unless its done perfectly, You WILL have problems... You really need the 1968 double winder mechanism otherwise the glass is
only held in one place....
Double winders are Very hard to find and very Expensive if You can find them... As far as I know, Aussie made Beetles did not have the double winders,
but German Beetles did during their change to large windows in 1965 until 1969...

thanks for the feedback guys, i am trying to work out if its possible to be done properly as its a look that i after.
i know that there will be some compromises, but i want to know which kit and where to get it.
i know someone who has said they have some twin lifters available, which i will obviously have to confirm before i go through all the purchasing.
boof: why do you think you have gone through two sets of lifters allready? is this a normal thing? anyone heard of this happening before?
nick: cheers mate, i thought i might get a response from you... 
nath: where did you get yours from? did you mean that the scrapers at the front continue on horizontally rather than curving with the shape of the
metal?
thanks for the feedback guys, i am still tossing up the decisions, as i am only interesting in doing it properly, or not at all.
btw, i will have popouts and a ragtop for ventilation.

pop outs and ragtop will combat the ventilation..
just made sure you do it all right.. or get a pro to..
i dont think you'll have too much trouble w/ the lifters if theyre capable of the weight from the start.
next you'll need to shave the door-handles off im sure it is illegal
here but i wish it wasnt.. they look so good extra cool w/ one piece
windows

Yes,
Originally ALL one piece window outer scrapers were just horizontal and looked crappy... since then someone is making them so they curve around the
front edge...
look so much better..
The one piece window glass has NO channel at the front of the door only the rear Bailey channel... and New bailey channel is very tight on the
glass... this can wreck the lifters or break off window winder handles... I'm having this same problem with normal window bailey channel.. I'm
going to have to drive a wedge of some sort into the bailey channel to get the gap wide enough so the glass slides up & down without effort....
If You get all these things right, then You will have NO problems...

Damien,
there are Beetles about with electric solenoids to open the doors bonnet & engine lid... I don't think there are any laws against it, so long
as the doors shut etc... especially if You still use the original door locks & catches and just use central locking solenoids... I like door
handles...
especially on doors  
Have You tried driving with the wipers high beam headlamps blinkers and stop lamps ON and CD Player OFF ??
I'll bet the engine doesn't stop...
I just remembered something else... the electric/vacuum control valve... that is something else that consumes Power...
when You change back a gear.....
You May have to look for an alternator Damien...

From what lee says sounds like you'll be all set to have the best one piece windows around!
hey lee! your cars looking great:P ima hafta come up o sydney and have a Squizz somtime
i took the car to dean at volkspower.. i tought i posted it in other thread.. the cold weather rooted my battery genny was charging fine.. i have no amp so CD player is cool.. wouldnt mind an alternator.. but money is
restricting all aspects of car atm.. rego/insurance coming up.. car also needs a service.. old man is meant to pay for it as he was using the car for
the last yr.. but he hasnt got the cash either 
i think there would be legal problems with the solenoid doors here as if you were in a crash.. no one would be able to get you out of the car.. but i
suppose you'd have door lock pulls and no doubt a window would be smashed..... i have seen the kits in mags.. would love some even just install them w/ the handles on.. so i can walk past and have the
door "pop" open
too kool for skool =)
