loose as a .......
i just have soooo many questions ....
just wondering if anyone has had this prob b4
my t3's fan belt is a super loose floppy hanging out goose
it is squeeking on and off when i drive
i think for some reason the fan wheel is worn (the gen. pulley is fine)
i have bought a slightly thicker belt (10x 1000 instead of 9.65 x 1000) but its still really floppy
i guess i could chock up the generator a bit ???
any other options ????

The type 3 belt is different to a Beetle, and are you adjusting it correctly with teh gen pully shims.

No one put a power pulley on by chance?
These are smaller diameter and make your motor run hot - but the fan uses less power

worng pully
i have a six volt pulley on at the moment which i have found out is a smigen smaller
i have no shims between the two pully sides and a thicker belt 10x1000
the difference in the two pulleys is minor
not enough to make it sooooo loose

Type 3 fan belt doesn't drive the fan !!!!
what about trying a 10mm x 990 or 980 belt & adding shims if necessary. I don't have any type 3 manuals... sorry..
BUT for the Beetle owners reading.... a type 3 engine can be driven WITHOUT a fan belt... the fan belt ONLY drives the generator.... the cooling Fan
is attached to the end of the Crankshaft ..... Nifty eehh.... What other car can be driven WITH OUT a Fan Belt ???? :o maybe a Porsche !!
I suppose You could Say that type 3's don't have a fan belt only a Generator Belt...

A kombi with a type 4 motor... :thumb
Probably also a type 4 VW, and possibly a Porsche 914, because they all use the same engine. Not sure about cooling arrangements though.

Generator Belt Problem on type 3
The 6 Volt pulley being on the generator I presume.... is smaller... which will just charge the battery a little faster... Are
both pulleys on straight... as an out of round or slight out of alignment pulley will wreck a belt in a few minutes... if the wider belt is being
jammed into a too Narrow generator pulley made for 9.5mm... then the sides of the belt will jam in the generator pulley and flap when it is
released... and also probably stretch the belt... and also wear the edges off the belt.. If the 10mm belt fits onto the fan OK then concentrate on
fixing the generator pulley... You will probably have to widen the pulley with shims... and maybe use a shorter belt.... in the short term... Your
engine Cannot Overheat because of this belt... Have You tried to spin the generator by hand with out the belt on... Maybe the generator is seizing
.... thats about all I can think about... at the Moment.. I hope it helps..:o:o Best of Luck..

Fan driven direct from Crankshaft.....
Hello Kruizin Kombi... Yes I believe You are correct.. but as far as I know only VW & Porsche engines have the fan connected to the crankshaft....
Maybe other Air Cooled engines such as the Citroen air cooled engine in the GS series.

Fan Belt Adhesive... Sticky
Many years ago I transferred a 2 litre engine into an L300 express van which originally had a 1600 engine. I had terrible problems with the Alternator
belt as the engine was imported from Japan & the alternator was on the incorrect side of the engine.... anyway I used about 20 different belts
before finally succeeding in aligning an Alternator.. I did use at times, a pressure pack can of Belt Adhesive... that states on the can that You can
run all belts loose and the belt adhesive stops the belts from slipping.... Its a black-dark brown sticky substance and does work... but it does help
to have the pulleys aligned first....:thumb It has a Yellow Label with black writing. Its probably available from Vee Belt Suppliers.
I also found that SPZ type belts are very strong.. I think they are 9.5mm wide...:thumb
