air filters...
can a pod filter be put on a beetle? mate just put one on his civic and loves it.. and then another on his commy... if it is decent for the price, how
do i put it on my beetle? what does it replace, how do i do it?

yep. std 1600 solex opening is 50mm so get one to match. they just hose clamp on. get a quality one, not some super cheap noname. you dont want to
risk your motor. they come in all sorts of sizes so get one that fits in the hole you goit. 2stage oiled is best sort.

fantastic! i can get a K&N one for cheap.. friend works at auto shop.. what does it replace though? the oil bath on the top? it'll help cooling,
and give it a little more "go" yeah? + MORE noise Lolz..

hose clapms right onto carb. replaces entire oil bath with a nice little filter. k&n are vgood. make sure its big enouigh to supply enough air
without restriction and make sure you engine bay & engine tin is goood so its not sukking dusty air leaking in from back wheels. your mate should
have 50mm units good for 2l cars. get one.....

good.
depending on the thickness of the filter flange, be ready for it to poss be a bit tight where the filter flange fits to the carb opening - on the
right hand side where the choke pump or whaterver it is rises up.
mines a bit tight : ] i just slide the filter flange over the opening first then using a pin punch, ease the hose clamp into this tight spot. then
tighten clamp and drive away smiling...
if you take your car to a mechanix, check this before driving away as i made the mistake and the filter had fallen into the engine bay by the time i
got home....

thought it was somthing that was less able to get hot (oil/metal) that would also allow a bit more rome for circulation.

The K & N part number is RC 0984 this is a box of four as it was the cheapest way to buy them ,then get three of your mates to share the cost .

I reconmened them and I wont race a car without them. spend the money cheap ones don't cut it and the K&N will last longer anyway so it will be
cheaper in the long run. oh and the motor will love you 4 it. lol

I just switched from an oil bath to a pod filter. The oil bath was more restrictive, and the car felt zippier. One big difference was that it
definitely revved higher much more easily. It did give a slight increase in power and driveability. The oil bath cleans better though i reckon, and
its more waterproof

the one in the race car gets big time wet ,I have never had to move it or had the driver say the motor is missing becase of it .
We have had a > K & N in the car with the V8 toyota now for it 3rd year no problems at all ,the rush sound stays in your mind for ever when you
in the looking seat .

havent noticed much change in sounds, although i cut half a 2L soft drink bottle and screwed it in the top to solve the waterproof problem. Although
waterproofing was only a problem when i had standoffs

So seagull.. can't the filter be put straight on the carb? or does it need the long tube? and will about 10cm of 50mm PVC tube do the trick? |

do it properly and put twin carbs on a twin K&N's they will increase the flow in and also clean just as well as anything else. You can alos get a
sock for when racing in the dirt.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

the reason seagul has the pipe is to allow u to fit a larger air filter onto the 50mm base on the solex carb.....75mm to 50mm i think it was

The only reason i fitted a pod filter was because my oil one was leaking oil all over the carb and engine. You dont need to fit it on piping, it can
go straight on top of the carb. The one i got is a generic taiwan pod filter, not a K&N one. It has a rubber ring on the base with a screw
clamp.
on a side note, the other reason i fitted an upside down bottle half, was so i could cut a hole in it and feed the "stovepipe" to the carb so it
wouldnt ice up (and stall) before the manifold heated up.

killa I had played with the small air cleaner direct to the carb is was ok ,but found it was getting blocked as dirt does not take long to clog up the
small filter .
I then found that to get a large air filter to fit a vw is hard there is no room to go up ! So I set out to find a suitable rubber hose to fit.
keep this in mind it needs to be 50mm one end with a 90deg bend then straight for a bit then dog leg and go to 90deg.with an opening to 75mm as thats
the size 3" that most places sell at a good cost to joe blog !off the street
I guess you could make it from PVC pipe a few fittings and so on .
You would need to seal the carb side well as the pvc fitting has a wall of around 4 >5 mm .
The one on my wifes jeep is made from ally I post a photo for you to see

sounds like a fair setup so long it fits in the engine bay under the lid as most auto shops have the bigger filters out vcheap and the hose acts as a
stiil air chamber/plenium meaning usually better running. wouldnt use a cheap filter tho on anything doing numerous off road/gravel Ks.
off road, use an off road filter (look at the stickers on any Off road racing vehicle). in this case you can get a filter to clamp strait onto carb or
get creative an design somting else.

You can buy the el cheapo chromed top air filter that mose aftermarket VW shops sell... but I prefer the original VW air filter ... no restriction to
talk of... the air just hits the oil and goes thru the open weave stuff and into the engine... also You can use the Pre Heated air into the carby in
the winter.
I do like the look of the ram flo air filters...
