fuel sender into early fuel tank
hi all
anyone have any experience with putting a sender into an early fuel tank
the tank is from my 60, is the upright type, with tall filler, similar to oval.
really need to know if anyone has any recommendation as to what type of sender will suit best.
to be used with VDO gauge

Yes i fitted one in my Oval its a VDO aftermarket type
You have to bend the arms to make it read in the early tank.

My friend had an autometer sender installed into the top of his oval tank. Pretty straight forward - had a tank guy (who does welding etc on them) cut
the hole and drill the mounting holes to be used with self tapping screws. Although not as good as a threaded hole, everything appears to hold very
well. The autometer sender is adjustable to get the right readings but not sure of the ohm rating etc the vdo gauge might need.

Mmmm im interested in this too. Dave, how involved is the aftermarket VDO type? did u have to drill a big hole in the tank or did it fit inside the
filler neck?

The VDO one I had in my oval was out of a late 50's Karman Ghia. The tanks have a fuel sender and fir straight in to an early beetle.
Its was a tubular type with the float sliding up and down in a tube.
Maybe the same as early split Kombi too.

In the VDO catalogue they have 2 weld in flanges-one for 54mm PCD tank unit and one for 80mm PCD unit. They also have a sandwich type for 54mm units.I
have welded in a 54mm one to my Oval tank and they have a good range of tank units(Tube Type)of different lengths and Ohm values to suit VDO fuel
guages.I haven't bought my tank unit yet but think I need 220726(this is an old part number) which is 373mm long and 66 Ohms and 54mm PCD for
mounting screws.
