wiring loom


Hey guys,

my '60 project has intact, most of its original wiring loom. It has the 4 fuse black box, with a 2 fuse box for the headlights.

I'm a bit apprehensive about using 40 year old wiring, what alternatives are there? I am considering re-wiring the whole car - is it better to just re-wire it with a new loom from a later model beetle or just skip the factory wiring altogether and go for something more modern?

I'm rewiring my 72 Super from scratch using the new blade style fuse boxes. Using screw terminal blocks and lugs at all joints and only using spade terminals at lights guages etc. Also using cable compression glands to give a watertight seal at entry points tp lights and body. All connections will be easily accessible and will also look pretty schmick. Cost a lot of $ though buying packs of lugs and you only use two of one type. A new loom would have probably been cheaper but I get a kick out of designing and doing this kind of stuff.

Perhaps you would investigate using the main cabling eg: large ignition cabling and replacing the rest. Another tip is to run another 30Amp cable from the battery up to the front through a relay to run the headlights. will give you much brighter headlights as there is less voltage drop from the original design. I'm assuming that you have converted to 12V.

mmm the car is basically a rolling shell, so it will be going 12v anyway. The wiring is as it was 44 years ago:) so i think i'll junk all of it and just chuck in a new wiring loom with a blade style fuse box.

I like the idea of brighter headlights, my current ride a '63 converted to 12v has 100w halogens with no relay. its pretty adequate. I'm not quite certain whether a relay is worth it???

Jon the biggest thing to do with VW wiring is get a good heavy cable from the battery to behind the dash. Everything will work way better.
Relays on the lights is a must. Relays (6v) even make a difference with 6 volt lights.
I will be putting a relay on the brake lights too. Mounted in the back. Cut down the distace for current to travel. = brighter brake lights.
