Mines like that too:(

Check your oil level and consider adding some gearbox treatment (banana in a bottle) to it - it made a difference to mine... then if it is still a problem, just turn the radio up :P

If it doesn't jump out of gears, I would try to put up with it for as long as possible - oh yeah, I don't have a radio:bounce

In answer to the oil questions, its all bad news. Oil is about 5 years old and the gearbox has been leaking for about 4 years. Good isn't it? So crap or low oil will make it do that in 4th only? I would've though all gears would be noisey. So I remove the sump plug and drain the old oil, I remove the side plug to fill the gearbox up with fresh oil+treatment. I don't have a pump, can I still do it somehow or need to take it to the local servo?

I have replaced the g'box oil on my kombi and I don't imagine it's that much different. The first time I used a clear plastic hose and a funnel to get the oil container above the gearbox inlet. Of course, it fills just when you've got the pipe full of oil! The next time, Penrite had changed their bottle to include a nifty piece of pipe that let me fill from under the kombi. Slow process though getting thick oil through a thin pipe in cold weather!

You just have to be careful with the tube extensions on a bottle that you dont squeeze and the tube pops off and in the box. It happens with people putting trans fluid in cars.

Raf you dont have a real lot to loose by changing the oil. I don't think you would get charged much by a garage if you get them to do it.

Raf, It will be the main diff bearings that are whining. You notice it in 4th because the engine is at constant revs and a constant noise. Try replacing the gearbox oil and put the additive in. It will make it a little quieter but dont expect it to go completely. You could swap the diff only if the rest of the gearbox is good which would mean you wouldnt have to strip the gearbox right down!

Cheers

Steve

Raf, if you get the 1L bottles of mobile GB oil (Ithink its 80W-90 GL5 stuff) it has an extendable tube in the cap. -it is sucured as well so you wont lose it into your gearbox... you wont get the tube in far enough anyway, so dont worry about losing anything in there)

Soome ppl say GL5 grade oil will corode the bras syncros and that GL4 is the way to go, like most oil threads on the forum, you kinda have to make up your own mind. I'm using GL4 to be safe.

Cheers

Raf wack in a litre of Moreys Oil stabiliser. Had the same trouble with the oval (non splitcase) box when I first got the car. Was howling and jumped out of 4th a bit.
Trouble was no oil, due to split axle boots. Replaced the boots filled it up with gear oil and a litre of Moreys. No problems after that. Quietened it right down. Still had a very slight high pitched whine at speeds over 100kays.

Any auto spec retailer should have it. Repco, Bursons.
Called Moreys Oil Treatment or Stabiliser . Good for your motor too. But only a little bit.
Put the whole botttle in the gear box first then top up with gear oil.
It will take a while to get it all in the box. I put the oval up axle stands and jammed the bottle up under the car and let it run in over night. Thick stuff. like treacle.
