Straight axle conversion help please NOW WITH PICS

I'm currently doing my straight axle conversion on my 63 dual cab. I have done the modifications to the spring plates as required (ie. cut the notch in to fit the axle tubes) but when I actually get the axle tubes in, the axle seems to be angled too far to the rear therefore giving me major toe out on the back wheels. I can't find any detailed info about what exactly should be done with the spring plates. The instructions I've read only say to cut the beetle pattern into the splitty's spring plate.

I thought that common sense would say that I put the ends together and cut the pattern from there. This left the forward most hole, originally in the splitty spring plate, unused when the beetle axle tubes went in.

It seems that if I want to get the axles to align properly, the forward most hole originally in the spring plate will have to be utilised as the forward hole with the beetle axle tubes in.

I just wanted to check before cutting further and stuffing the spring plates. Thanks.

Ross.

Hmmm- no useful pics... you do have to mill
some slots rather than just using holes..

Question for you - when you are looking at the camber
have you actually (re)set the springplate to a new 'lowered' angle?

Its actually quite reduced and needs to be 4 deg to 7 deg
(rather than the stock 20 deg) to produce a neutralish
camber. Equates to a drop of around 3.5 inches.

????????

Hopefully these photos will show what I was trying to say. I need to know if the beetle spring plate should be matched with the end of the splitty's spring plate or should I move it (the beetle spring plate) forward so that the forward hole in the beetle spring plate matches the forward hole in the splitty spring plate????

And yes, I will now mill slots rather than holes.

Thanks.

one pic is worth a thousand words!

Gees,

hard to explain in words but I'll give it a try - I'll take pics
next time I do a set.

You sort of position it so everything is sorta 'half overlapping'.

Place the rear holes in the bug springplate so the rear of these
holes is just touching the front of the rear holes in the
bus springplate - mark em, and mark the front hole.

Now in the bus springplate - mill of slot 'forward' for the rear
holes
and mill a slot 'backwards' for the front hole.

When done, I normally mill to get a tad more forward
adjustment overall, just in case - just need to ensure
you have enough adjustment when rear wheel alignment is done..

???????????????????????

Make any sense?

regards

RobK
