I still absolutely disagree with being forced to put personal information on a public forum such as telephone numbers.

forums are often scanned by spam bots and other nefarious people for very such information.

I think it is very much a balancing act between being able to have a buy and sell forum that can run without having timewasters or similar while not having to supply excess information.

I don't think a locality, name (even if it is just ur first) is o concern. mobile numbers may be disputed. But its like many things, if you don't want to play by the rules don't play.

agreed. However it annoys me when people complain when members put their stuff on ebay and not here.

No different to listing in the newspaper or trading post. Both of these are online too!

Actually, you know what - there's this thing, online, that has everyone's name, phone number and locality in it - hell even the street address!
Yes the phone directory.... if bots are gonna collect that sort of info that is where it's directed so that they get a high concentration in a format they need!

newspaper and trading post don't ask for my name :)

bots cant scan the white pages search engine, nor can you do an "upside down" search in any legal CD white pages. :)

I'm not making this up, i'm warning you that it goes on. same reason I use hotmail any time I have to post an email address in forums. my hotmail account gets up to 200 spam messages a day, and my real email address gets maybe 5 a week.
