not spats. but you probably need some cursory attempt at mudguardery. I'd build one for sure, but maybe have thinner cut down and rolled guards at the back. noice, very noice.

rods

go to volksrod .com they have a tech section on there that gives step by steps on how to lengthen chassie.Below is a photo shop of my rod look 64 that will be finished in about two months. It aint chopped or anything as i dont have the skills as yet and really need to get it on the road as it is our "family" car and was meant to be finished two months ago. Its in primer at moment and the satin black will go on in a week or two and the flames a week, later the stencils for the flame layout are done and all the paint bought. the lowering is done and the motor sitting in the pobjoys workshop waiting for the call.

you are right, the top one has a ford front end.
they arent lengthening the chasis, they are moving the bodies forward, you can tell as the back wheels are also further forward !
Anyway, these rat rods are supposed to be a cheaper easier look at something different, so it makes sense of moving the shel rather than modding the chassis.
Personally i wold do the full body move as it makes the Whole car look different as just lengthening the fron would look half assed i think.....hmmmmmmm. would like to compare it actually.

anyway...........

The top first one is called 'stink bug' and was built by a guy that us to live in San Fransico. His name is Fred Hidalgo and he achieved the look by fitting an "I" beam style frontend that is common on Hotrods....As far as I'm concerned, that is the best way to go as for as the look is concerned.

But there are a couple of problems with this method in Australia. First it would be tough (though no impossible) to get it legal as a whole new frontend subframe has to be purchased (SoCalook.com) or fabbed. And second, the "I" beam set-up has be bought. That said.....The technology is there for the taking in the Hotrod scene. Go se Castlemain Hotrods (or similar) for these set-ups.

The second option is to move the body back around 350mm to get the look. This method look to wierd at the rear of a bug if you ask me....Though it's not a problem if you are building a ute style rod. Again this method has it's problems....It is very hard to mod a bug body in this way, as the floorpan/body relationship is very important to the integrity and safety of the car....

Another possible method is to re-mount the front beam farther forward. I think some guy on volksrods.com makes something like that....Could be a far cheaper option. though not as pretty.

I feel the first option is the best if you want a 'legal' road car, that has the right hotrod look and one that the cops will more than likely go for. It would also make for a much better handling road car as the wheel base would be extended....

One day I will do this....I have been wanting to do this for over a 10 years, but other projects, family and studys get in the way....

One day!

FUCH your early!

Yes guards are a requirement. 1/3 + 1 inch of the rolling diameter.

I guess I better get mine finished soon before they become like hemroids. After all it's been in the works for more than 2 years and in sketches for a few more...

It's a pity Jeff didn't bother to do it right and get it all legal before taking it on the road. Just gonna make those of us who are doing them legal get harrassed more ....

In regard to using ford style dropped I beams etc or frame head extensions.

It is possible and engineers will even approve it (when done properly) ... but most engineers will call it an ICV when the wheelbase is extended - you can forget about an aircooled engine then. All current ADRs will apply.

Maybe once it's on the pan and the roof chop is completed...

But I'm not telling too many details of thigs that will happen as I don't want to see them on other cars before we are done.
