jiff and some 0000 steel wool, or the steel wool and any soap, polishes them up a little and removes some of the cracks that develop over time, they
are the ones trapping the dirt, maybe same 1500 grit paper or something instead of the wool but ive done the steel wool before

Ive had these on my oval and the safest and best method of cleaning is:
Wax and Grease remover|Prepsol to clean.....then apply a silicon based tyre cleaner(Turtle Wax Tyre stuf was the best)
Do not sand as this will only create more 'tooth' for dirt to adhere to...

have u tried wd40 and lots of new , clean rags? Usually wiping it once then turning the rag helps. Stops you spreading the crap around.

I used wd40 on mine today, sprayed on and just wiped off, worked very well.
