Buggy Buying

Hi all, I'm about to look at/purchase a baja for myself. Always wanted one so I've decided it's time to make it happen.

Anyway, I wanted to know if there's anything specific I should look for when inspecting a potential baja, other than common VW problems and the things you would look for on any potential car - is there anything specific on the baja to keep an eye out for? It's recently run out of rego.. so it's had a RWC at some stage, should it have a mod plate in that case?

Car I'm checking out is:
1969 1600cc roll cage, reinforced chassis, lifted, roof cut out with cover, CD player, good tyres

He tells me it's been strengthened and had about $9000 spent on it abhout 7 years ago.

Thanks for any advice.

two things to think about,

Is it IRS?

If the car is from NSW, does it have an engineers report?

The second is very important if you want to reregister it. Otherwise you will have to get one yourself. :puke

What's he asking?

It's not worth alot without it's rego. See if he can organise a pinkslip for it, otherwise don't pay too much.

and if it has rego make sure it says it a baja not a beetle cause if any thing goes wrong the insurance company will wipe it and then be after you with conspiracy to deceive

He's asking $2400. He's also offered to get a roadworthy done on it and to negotiate a little more for the price. Haven't had a chance to have a look yet, possibly tomorrow.

Willl ask/check about the IRS.

Car would have been Qld registered previously.

Cheers.

check A pillar bases for rust (try lifting the open doors and check for play at the base of the pillar, steering. brakes (shudders, lack of brakes etc), steering (stiff, free play), gearbox jumping out of gear or making growling noises, check the strengthening if it has been cut make him show u what has been done, make sure it has an engineers cert.

Ok I've had a look (in the dark mind you) and a drive of this baja...

Played with the doors - no play, no rust I could see. No rust underneath the car or around the guards.
I checked underneath and he showed me the strengthening, it's got a big X shaped welded underneath.. looked like a pretty tidy job.
I asked if it was IRS... and he didn't know. Well he said "aren't they all?" and I said.. "err, no."
I have no idea how to check if it is IRS.. does it make much difference? (bear in mind I'm not likely to go offroad all *that* much.

Test drive was... ok. I didn't realise quite how cramped these cars are inside. Are the pedals on all bugs that close together? This was my first drive of one and with my boots on I seemed to be hitting all three pedals at once a fair bit! :o

Brakes felt DODGY. It pulled up ok but there was bad throbbing/pulsing.

And security would be an issue. One door has a simple latch attached to it (the actual door lock doesn't appear to work) and it's a ragtop too so anyone could get in pretty easily. Not a major issue I guess, just never be able to leave anything in the car.

Passenger seat was weird too.. too far to the side or something. It didn't feel right. Also, the headlights and dashlights flickered.. I'm guessing it has some wiring issues.

Gearbox and engine seemed ok. On the outside it looked good too, some great barwork front and rear.. and a tidy looking rollbar.

I'm not 100% sure though. Just sort of documenting my experiences here in this thread... :)

I'm considering asking him to get a RW done on it before he sells it to me and splitting the extra cost or something. Still for $2400 it didn't seem too bad.

I have one question though.. he said the engine is a bit "tired".. and I tend to do a lot of highway driving. How's my experience going to be with a "tired" 1600 engine on the highway @ 110km/h 30 mins to work and 30 mins back every day? Painful? Or not too bad? I didn't get a chance to get it going that fast on the test drive... it did 50mph nicely.. but 75mph?

Thanks for all the advice in this thread, much appreciated... and I apologise for my rambling. :P

(he wouldn't give me the steak knives unless I bought an ab-roller too  )

does his wife come with the ab-roller and were the steak knives originally intended for use on her??? now come on man, this is the critical point in the purchase of this buggy, get it together.......:duh:):P

ps- irs is independant rear suspension... this means from the gearbox runs a shaft with rubber boots either end down to the back of the wheel, so one shaft for either side. irs is better for playin dirty in the mud and sand due to clearance issues and suspension travel, articulation and so on.....
i'd make him get the roadworthy done first of all just in case any hidden "nasties" turn up, then its still his problem and not yours...

thats as about all i'm usefull for, just hold tight for better answers from the guys in the know......

all vw are irs
most make it simple swing or irs both are irs but the one most people call irs is better as u can jack it up with out the wheels leaning
and the oil dose not run from the gear box to the drums as the seal all ways leak the old big 5 studs are mostly swing axel and the smaller 4 studs are mostly the irs
if that help

Not really the type of car you'd want to be doing alot of commuting in
they're built for offroad not cruising down a highway. small cramped noisy & dangerous (in an accident)

pedals get a bit of getting used to, the later model cars have the pedals spaced more than the earlier ones.
