When you say a "normal" stero i guess you mean just a new style head unit and a couple of speakers? if thats the case then a generator will do the job not a worry but if you are running amps then you will start to get into problems. Its all about what sort of wattage you are planing to use. If it gets to high then the generator will not be able to give you enough power and you will start to drain the battery. Most new head units on there own will be fine and you shouldn't have any dramas.....

i run a kenwood cd head unit ,jbl 7x10 rear speakers and 6 1/2 inch front sony explodes with a generator.
the only time i have problems is when it's cranked to 11 and your idling, after a while it can intermittantly cut the music for a second

hey jnr356

11 as in volume ? so basically if the generator doesn't take it when its idling, it cuts off itself ? what if I pump the rev back up a bit while idling ?

Thanks.

I've had a stereo running 6X9's (it doesn't matter wht wattage the speakers are, it only matters how much power the headunit puts out, its like saying my fully sik 18" chrome wheels help my Gemini go faster) anyways, run it with a higher rated battery. I used a 460CCA battery, used my stereo for as long as it takes to properly wash polish and wax your car, and it still started fine afterwards...:bounce

cant offer any help on power usage, but can offer help on being paranoid about your battery draining.
i found that my pissy stereo was draining my battery just by being in standby mode (dodgy electrics, but would have been a very big job to fix these dodgy electrics) so i had a switch put in.

you want to listen to stereo, you turn switch on, then power up your stereo and enjoy.
you want to turn stereo off, you power down stereo, turn switch off and then there is NO WAY your stereo can get any power from your battery- hence cant slowly drain it.

its probably redundant now and wont make a difference if your geny is charging your battery properly, but if you are paranoid like me...

i run an hi-po Alpine unit with 6 1/2 inch splits and an 800W amp runing 2 subwoofers with my generator.
i used to use a bigger battery like for a falcon and could leave it running for hours with the car off (like at the nats). never had a problem.

now i got a mid 50s pan theres no room for bigger battery so i had to use a tiny one but still no probs, i just dont run it long with the car off just in case. hope this helps, i dont think u will hav any issues Don.

Your 320 watt speakers will only be using probably 35 to 50 watts... That was an overkill on Your speakers..
and Early 12 volt generators don't charge the battery when idling... the later large Generators charge most of the time..

It all depends on Your Battery , when the engine isn't going..
The most CCAs You can fit in is best... 460 CCAs is good...
If You were running a 320 watt amplifier - at high volume -You Would be in Trouble....
Also, if You have the Headlights and wipers on, plus blinkers and brake lamps at the same time... can also cause problems

Most Stereo systems are connected to the battery all the time, to keep their memories....
I like connecting the stereo direct to the battery and not going thru the ignition system... that way, it gets full power & doesn't take any power out of the engine ignition system...

Best of Luck...

Lee
