ignition recommendations

i've got a pobjoy 1916 with an old 050 dizzy, but the cap's borked. i've been having fun (!) trying to track down a replacement cap and it seems that no one has any or knows where to get one.

so, i'm gonna bin this one. a couple of the places i spoke to recommended the 009 mainly because of the availablity.

i'm sure this has been covered before, so i'll go and have a dig around for old threads now, but in case my search is unsuccessful, what would you guys recommend?

Here is a good article to read on dizzies / ingnition

http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/distributor.htm

What carbs you running?? - twins??

Cheapest acceptable option - 009

Best expanable option - MSD

By the way
Aircooled.net sell 050 caps for $16.95US

have a play around their site. Lots of stories to read about each product listed

My Pobjoy has the old style 009 dizzy(retard for no.3). The new ones have no retard for no.3 and do not seem to work as well. There was a post here somewhere:jesus about the dizzy's....I have tried the non-offset type in my donk and the performance loss is noticable to me. Give Stan a bell and see what he rekons???? Good luck!! (CB performance(USA)) sell the caps...

I use a Crane XR700/3000. It has an optical pickup. The only problem is you lose the retard on number 3. Have had it installed for 5 years and have not adjusted the timing at all. We ran an Allison (before it became Crane) on our old type 3 for 15 years without any trouble and I still have the unit here...saving it for a rainy day!! There are also Petronics etc but I have not tried them. They are cheaper and probably just as reliable. They Crane was about $350 + the coil. The other systems are under the $150 mark and can use a standard coil. HTH.

what is the difference between the 050 and the 009 (and the 010 for that matter)

if you are gonna bin the 050, i would be keen to take it off your hands.

i have a compufire with elec ignition and coil pack so the lack of cap doesnt bother me. i can t comment on the setup as the engine has yet to be turned over.

let me know about the 050 as it would be good for some research to wee if i can work out the differences
