So what are you fitting the brakes too ??

There rears are ready to run if you want to fit them first.

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1247

c.b's are US$599 for the front kit which includes their 2 1/2" drop spindles, rotors and calipers.
the rears are $619 for handbrake compatible.
so that's US$1218 for the pair, which is AU$1700 ish, add about AU$300 for freight.
$2000 and you've got wide 5 discs all round and a set of spindles to boot :)

I am sure the CSP and CBperf stuff is top notch. The thing you wanna think about is, How will you get parts in 10 years time?

I am guessing both those companies use parts that are easy to find in europe or the US, but here I reckon it might be a nightmare in years to come.

I would go to custom offroad or John Sherman (volks conversions), or at least someone in Aust who uses locally available parts. I'd wouldn't be surprised if their kits weren't be cheaper too. I have a sherman kit on my buggy and it is very good. Not to mention after sales service which has been fantastic.:)

Oh... make sure you know how much extra width the kit adds to the front track. Because I am sure most of the kits do. Narrowing your front beam slightly is probably the way around this. Don't know if it's legal in Nsw though?

Personally, I'd use a sherman kit. I had a 4 stud set-up from AP spares (now defunct) on my old 66 beetle and it worked real well too. It used beetle caliper/rotor (machined for special bearings) and a laser cut caliper mount. If you did this you could just make up a wheel adapter for big 5.

BTW, all of these kits will need to be certified by an engineer (in NSW) and reported to your insurance company otherwise ya car is illegal and your insurance void.
:(

NRMA didn't even ask questions about my discs when I told them about the 66 beetle, the buggy is another story altogether, Shannons are insuring it.

Definitely disc brake it, but...Do it properly ;)

Classic VW;
thanx for the tip. I am sure the stuff is well made. However, I repeat my questions.

1. Are the caliper/pad assemblies off a known GM car sold through GM dealers here in OZ and what car might that be?

2. How much extra width does the conversion add to the King/linkpin front end? Because I am sure that kit does add some.

As for whether CSP will be around in 10 years time, only time will tell, it's premature to try and predict.

Also the rules for this forum state:
"Please note that advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are inappropriate on this forum."
You'd be teetering on the brink of advertising I'd reckon (or maybe I am being over-sensitive.) ;)

Any ideas where can i get wide 5 front discs/calipers etc for a 59 splitty, the kits i have been quoted for are $1800aud, cannot justify paying this amount just for the front, any engineers out there!!

Andy
The ones Roy sells from CSP will fit the splitty.

Also they do not add anything to the track.
I spoke to John Shermann about his and he told me that his discs add 15mm each side.

Cheers

Has anyone put Sherman disks on a splitty? The wide 5 beetle ones I have are pretty good! Just wondering what they are like on a split?

Thanks

Steve, Sheman beetle type wont fit directly to a early splitty, the stubb is a little bigger than the later split, just need to get bearings to fit i suppose..

59 BUS has john sherman discs on the back wheels on the splitty. Mine is just a 68 ball joint front end with later bay window discs.George from custom off road made the adapters, adds 10mm.Not sure if this is right but Ive been told that for about 12 months type3 (variants in NZ and UK) had wide 5 discs as standard late 68/69,so I can run with out the adapters and not spend thousands.
