Bosch type 3 Injection HELP!!
Hi I have a type 3 with FI.
I just transferred the engine and Auto into my car.
and I am having a few troubles. The car is very hard on fuel 40 L to travell 120 miles with my old wornout engine with carby's I git aound 300 mile
for 40L.
The idle is up and down, will idle smooth then it wll get rough and stall.
Drive down the road a bit it idles again then rough and stops.
It will restart with no trouble.
When you rev the engine it blows black smoke
I have checked the points, timing, no leaks anywhere front or back ,no leaks at the injectors. I cannot find any pipes off.
When we changed it into my car we did not take anything off the engine all the FI was left on . we put new fuel lines everywhere.
Does anyone have any Ideas because unless I can sort this out I we have to put carbys on it and throw the FI over my left shoulder
thanks
Marc

300mile (482km) for 40l is about 28MPG, which sounds exceptionally good for carbs. I think the FI set up is supposed to get around 26MPG, but I'll
have to check.
Do you know whether the motor worked before you installed it in your car?
I would suggest you post your question here as well.

These guys have alot more functioning FI T3's than we do over here, and will be able to make many suggestions. I am going to tackle installing FI on
my fasty shortly, so I'm interested in your progress.

Do you have a Bentley manual or Muir's idiots guide? Both these books outline troubleshooting procedures to allow you to pin point the problem.

Did you get all the earth wires bolted down, obviously it is going real rich when it chugs out the black smoke, what about the cylinder head temp
sensor? Is it screwed into the head? If not the computer will stay rich...
Check all the wiring conections again.

Here's a question, do you have the vac hose on the pressure regulator going to the inlet manifold?

I think u should buy the Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management book by Charles Probst, anyway in the troubleshooting section it says poor fuel
mileage could be a. idle speed,ignition timing,idle mixture(%CO) b. cold-start valve leaking c.fuel pressure incorrect.I know u said u checked for
leaks but are u 100% sure there are no vacuum leaks :kiss |

i) There are one (or two) vacuum hoses going to the distributor-assuming you are running a stock SVDA unit. Are they intact?
ii)Vac hose to pressure sensor-this is a reasonably large hose which goes from under the throttle body to the sensor on the pass side of the engine
bay (this is the one 11cab mentioned)
iii)Hoses from the auxiliary air regulator.
iv)There is also a connection to the pressure switch on pre 70 models
If all the hoses are connected and not leaking, maybe check all the wiring. There are lots of wires, so it would be easy to get them mixed up.
Assuming everything is present and connected - I'm out of ideas. Trouble shooting the FI system is difficult which is why so many people ditched it
in favour of carbs as soon as it played up. I would strongly suggest that if you don't already have it you buy the Bentley manual for the type 3 and
probably Muirs' book as well. With these two books you can do just about anything.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

The one to the pressure sensor is on.
The hoses to the auxilliary regulator are on . What should happen if I take the hose of the Aux Reg ?just to see if it is working.
I have been told that this is a pre 70 system but think it may be the later system where would I find the pressure switch. There is a switch under
the throttle valve switch which also makes me think it is the later model
There is a cold start valve
there is 1 hose to the dissy.
thanks for your help
marc
I have the Muirs book it is very good

Well the car is running .
Took it for a drive to the Gold Coast last night went well
After playing with it for 2 and a half weeks and getting know where I did what every book said not to do and changed the ECU.
Unfortunately did not have a spare with the same numbers so what to do?
The hell wth it so I put it in and a way she went and so far so good.
