What to paint chassis with?

At the moment Im stripping down my chassis so I can give it a good clean and some fresh paint.
What paint should I use as a rust stopper and what should I use as a final coat? And what should I use on the underneath of the pan?
cheers

I've just painted my Manx Chassis with Barmastic. The last one was painted with por15.The por15 would be OK for a beetle inside and outside. They use Barmastic to paint oil rigs........and it is cheeper.

So do you just paint it with this Por15 stuff or should I put a coat of something else over the top?

And where do you get the "Barmastic" stuff Mick H??

You can get the Barmastic from PROTEC pty/ltd...17 Mctinosh street.Airport West.Vic.3042. Phone:0393352500.....Whereva the hell that is...I'm in QLD and that address is on the receipt...Por 15 would be good if you are on the street. The Barmastic requires no prep work...you just put it on with a brush/roller/spray. It is 2 pac....after 7 days you can drive into the ocean:jesus:jesus:P

YES.....it also chalks like por 15 in the sun. I applied 2 coats and will be putting a colour coat over the top as i have no roof on most times:P It is more flexible than por 15:)

If it's a two pack does that mean you need the special breathing apparatus to use it safely?

It sounds like an excellent product.

Sick checker plate floorpans Mick!
So would 2 litres be the minimum to paint a chasis? If it is Im deffinatly going for this barmastic stuff, POR15 is pretty damn expensive.

painting it that whitey grey colour would be good for when you have to clean all the crud off the pan..

The floorpan was lovingly welded together/re-constructed by Buggy Brad. The grey will only be visable until Wednesday when it gets painted over with a lovely splash of blue. I used 1 3/4 liters to paint the pan but it would depend on how thick you wack it on. I sprayed mine but you would use more rolloing it or brushing it on.:o

Common sense prevails here....mine was sprayed outside as it was a lovely day:kiss slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. I wore an old pair of overalls, disposable gloves, balaclava, p4 mask and goggles and a pair of thongs ( as you would ).If you were spraying in a confined space you would need a respirator of a different callibure and shoes as well. I would normally wear all this stuff if i was spraying something regardless of what it was because i hate trying to wash paint off my skin and pick the colours out of my nose. Ive seen "professionals" spray 2 pac in a booth wearing shorts and shoes and singlets with extraction fans and no eye protection/masks. These people are stupid. Just use common sense.;)

Needs a top coat to protect it from UV.
I know POR says that it can form slight surface imperfections which make it unsuitable as a top coat, however if you are topcoating, no problem.

If you use POR15 chassis coat, don't paint it over etch primer. I had my (and my mates) pans blasted and etch primed - checked with POR15 distributor before applying it. They said that it won't be as good a bond as over bare metal but will still adhere extremely well.

Well, if you call chipping and scratching with the slightest hint of a sharp object with even minimal force (even fingernail on already started chips) "extremely well", then I must recheck the dictionary.

I have used por15 before and have been more than pleased with it, but over etch primer it is not good. And yes I followed all application recommendations re. cleanliness etc etc.

There are many products out there!! Do some homework and ask people who are in the know as they say...I had only heard of the por 15 as it is commonly used in the motor trade etc and therefore has a lot of publicity. A good friend of mine used to paint oil rigs in W.A as well as other places so I asked him what would be good to paint the chassis of a beach buggy with... the end result was the Barmastic as it was cheaper than other available products and in his opinion better,so i took his word for it. If your building an offroader and it will see beach work etc...go to a boat builder or sandblaster and ask them what they would reccomend using if it was there car. I don't see anything wrong with por 15 as i have used it before but i didn't feel it met the requirements that my "junka" will be exposed to.:jesus Now to waterproof my EFI system...........:P
