Kombi wipers won't work
Hi everyone. First post. Bought a '74 Kombi (1600 motor) last week. Always wanted one (my first VW). Anyway, I am planning to do it up nicely. I
have a few problems with it, but all I think I can handle (I hope), but one that is bugguing me is the windscreen wipers. There is no movement
whatsoever. The arm/switch on the steering column sounds very clear and clicky when moved. There is no sound of movement coming from the wiper motor
at all. Seems dead. Anyway of testing that it has power going to it? The wires under the dash are a nightmare also. Hundreds of them going
everywhere.
Any help appreciated.

Ian,
Your wiper motor should have the following wires attached to it:
Black with Grey tracer, from Fuse S10 (Power), which continues on to the wiper switch.
Brown, earth wire
Black, to wiper switch
Black with Yellow tracer, to wiper switch
Black with Green tracer, to wiper switch.
So, to check, you should have four wires to the switch, all of which return to the wiper motor, plus an additional power and earth to the wiper
motor.

thanks for the wiring info, but after checking behind the fuse box, there seems to be just a yellow wire coming in to #10. I guess the wire could go
into any of them. I have just got hold of a tester to see if there is power going into the switch (on the column).

p.s. anyone know what kind of mileage / petrol I am expected to be using just going around town? 1600 motor, nothing inside the wagon except the 2
front seats and rear seat. |

Are you sure you're counting from the right end? S3 should have a single yellow wire to it, you want the third one from the opposite end.

no, I was counting from the right end. yellow wire in that one. Anyway, after much time wasting and farting about with meters and such, I decided to
start from the simplest thing first.
I replaced all the fuses...and tadaaahh!!
the wipers now work!
must have been a dud one in there (though they all looked ok and non appeared to be broken.

The fuse problem may have been caused by corrosion rather than a blown fuse. It's happened to me.
