Oval's upgrade
While my Oval body is in getting it's sunroof fitted and a coat of Double Yellow( booked in for 27 Sept. and will be away for at least 6 to 8 weels)I
have decided to do an upgrade that I had on my list of must haves before I started the process. At the time I couldn't find anybody here who had
successfully achieved this, but now find at least 4 have been done here to Beetles in the last couple of years so I will also have a go.Will start with
another pan and do all the mods again. The pan I have already finished will end up under my 66 offroad Beetle and by doing another for my Oval I can do
a better job on some of the mods like all the fuel injection stuff etc. From this-----

Excellent - I've always been curious to see how much you need to alter the frame horns to jam one of those in there.....
is it Type 3 or Kombi ? or something else ?

An auto is not a bad idea for a big motor fitted to an Oval show, cruiser car I reckon. Makes cruising a lot more relaxing in heavy traffic . Like
down down Beach Road in St Kilda or Chapel Street Melb. And the big motor will push it along easier on the Hyway.
Looking good NB

It's from a Type3 and from what I can find out the trans part is the same as the Kombi-but the diff housing is alloy instead of cast iron. This is
fairly heavy and a Kombi one is supposed to be twice the weight of this.Dave Becker alerted me to the extra weight of the Kombi one so found this
Type3 unit(too much weight out the arse end of a Beetle).I have found a bloke here who can doctor up the auto to take some more horsepower. The diff is
a 3.88 which will be just right for the 2.7lt Type4 motor thats going onto it. I have seen one in a buggy but didn't have a camera. It was a neat job
with the bellhousing mount needing a complete fabrication.Appar ently early Valiant V8 front engine mounts adapt well.Cutting the forks and fabbing up
strengthening plates looked fairly simple and would think the forks pulling would be the biggest issue. Will weld some angle to them and bolt them to
the shocker towers and put a brace between them. Will measure everything first so I can keep track of any distortion.Fitting the gear lever is simple
but I will move it back close to the handbrake.Have already modified a later short handbrake lever to to fit the early pan,so gear lever can come back
about 100mm.This will give me a very unique Beetle-an automatic Oval with fuel injected big Type4.May see it cruising alond St Kilda beach
someday??????????
