I might be mentioning the obvious but did you fit the plate under the shifter? And did you fit it the right way around?

ive got one in my bug no problems have you fitted it right not that its hard. it should have a plate between the shifter and tunnel. you can also adjust back and forward to get the correct shift. its facing the right way when the reverse lock out is facing the same way as the car. just a few thoughts hope they help

How to change gears with Your Eyes closed..

Did You mark the position of the intermediate plate under the shifter?? the one with a ledge on one side....
its very important to get the correct position of this PLATE...

ONLY ONE Way to do this....

Put original shifter back on....

Now make sure You can get ALL the gears including reverse...

Make sure You have to push the gearlever DOWN to get reverse...

When You have acheived perfection with a standard VW gear lever...
Mark where the PLATE sits... then take the gearlever etc off
and re fit the new EMPI gear lever assembly...

IF the PLATE is in the correct position... You will have NO worries..

Best of Luck... after a while, You can do it with Your eyes closed... but if driving on a public road, please keep Your eyes Open.. thank You
