Fuel Tank Q

Hey there,

I have a '62 body on a '69 floor pan. The '62 body didnt come with a fuel tank and my 69 fuel tank doesnt fit. Should I modify to get it to fit or just get a 62 tank? Also the 62 body doesnt have a fuel flap on the side.........So I'm thinking to fill a 62 tank up you must have to pop the bonnet right? If someone could post a pic of a 62 fuel tank it would be appreciated

LOL. Better just find an early tank. Easier than posting a picture of a late tank.

turbo beetle

Hey Adz,

With your brothers turbo beetle did he go blow through or draw through? I'm thinking about going blow through by adapting a carb from a laser/323 turbo......

Scott,

Up to 1967 the tank was filled by lifting the bonnet - the fiiler neck is in the top/front of the tank, and the tank has a raised rounded front edge.

From 68 onward the tank got a little flatter (the raised front edge is lower) and the filler is on the outside of the car (how do you tell a 68 from a 69 at one glance - the 68 has a finger indent on the outside filler and the 69 doesn't - it has an internal pull-wire release.)

Just one of the approximately 2000 changes made to VWs each year!

So since you have a 62 body you'll have to get the earlier style tank, and you'll have to lift the bonnet to fill it up. Oh - and since you will be lifting the bonnet a lot, have a look at the bent-under lip up the sides of the bonnet - some bonnets have a reinforcing strip welded behind the fold-under so it won't crack across the lip (and eventually across the whole bonnet). It's a simple job to get a reinforcing strip welded in there if your bonnet does not have it.

turbo

Rob, thanks for the info and advise :) I'm getting a tank from a VW shop for $30 tomorrow :)

Jon,
Yeah, probably will be expensive, just have to hunt for bargains. I picked up a solex 32 DIS carb (from a renault) in a deal yesterday, I'm getting the carb, the turbo and the intercooler from the same car for $100 :)

Hopefully will be able to use them,

Scott

heres a pic 4 U

G'day Adam

You said up top not to put the fuel flap in an early body, may ask why, are there problems with doing this or just to keep original, as I was thinking of putting a racing style fuel cap in my 58 similar to what a lot of the Geman Lookers do.

Cheers

Brad
