Oil coming out of PCV Tube


I tried starting my 70 Bug today and it was very hard to start. I ended up getting it started but it ran very rough. I thought it might have been some moisture on the distributor so I let it idle for a few minutes and moved on. After I was 100 meters out of my drive way the roughness returned and I stopped the car. I noticed oil coming out of the back of the car.

The oil had been spurting out of the PVC Tube beside the oil filler cap.

I am prepared for the worse but would like to know what would cause the problem.

I checked the oil last week and had new points condenser and timing done and the car was running very well before this all happened.

Any insight is appreciated

the pipe coming out next to the filler cap is the oil fume pipe which should connect to the air cleaner.......how much oil was ...you say "spurting out"? if u only got your points and condesor replaced and did timing last week i would be checking these as it is possible they were done wrong or the wrong points have been used etc. as for the oil spurting out i can see why it would unless there was pressure in the sump i suppose does the dip stick smell like fuel?

There is a fuel smell on the dip stick.

The tube that runs to the air cleaner was removed by the previous owner. The oil spurted up on to rear hood and onto the right hand side of the engine and began to pour out of the bottom of the hood into the ground.

id say that your needle and seat valve is worn and leaking fuel into the sump.......get a carbie kit from your local VW place and rebuild it........its not hard just as you take things apart set them in front of you in the same place so u remember where to put them back. then do an oil change and replace that hose from the filler to the oil bath air cleaner. if you dont have an oil bath anymore then block it off with something or attach a hose which leads down to the ground so it will spill oil on the grass if anywhere. a kit is about 25 bucks and if this doesnt fix the problem your car will thank you for the rebuild anyway.

Looks like I have a busy Monday rebuilding the Carbie. I hope that solves the problem and that it is nothing major..

remember to change the oil cause it will have fuel in it if it has been leaking. i had this problem not long ago and rebuilding my carbie has fixed alot of problems i didnt even realise i had untill i did it

while u are at it clean out the fuel pump and get a new fuel filter.....just to keep the fuel supply clean

hey also you can invest in a cut out valve for the fuel line, and rig it up to the ignition. Also change the oil, run for a while, then change again, to make sure all the oil is out. we had a similar problem, as the car was parked on a steep hill.



I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

I had a similar problem when I left My electric fuel pump turned ON...
the fuel bowl overflowed into the engine...
Fuel smelt like petrol... changed the oil...
changed the carby...

I also had the other problem.. I accidentally blocked off MY breather hose and oil spurted from the dipstick....
Scared the Sh** out of Me until I realised what I had done..

A New needle & seat assy for the carby should fix that problem.. someone told Me that the standard VW fuel pump output varies a lot, & can get up to 10 PSI pressure which is a lot for a needle & seat to cut off...

Don't forget to use hose clamps on all fuel lines...
& try NOT to have Your fuel filter hanging in mid air...
they can pull the pipe out of the fuel pump or carby, resulting in a Fuel fed fire... Not a pretty site...

Make Sure You carry a Fire Extinguisher....
Cheap Insurance....

Anyone know the cost of a fuel cutoff solenoid???

Thanks for all your help. One last question on the carbie rebuild. In the manual it states to soak the carbie in some cleaner for a day and then blow the channels with compressed air. Is that necessary with my problem as don't have an air source?

u can buy little chrome vent thingys to pop onto the oil breather pipe next to the filler if u dont have an oil bath any more. glad to help good to see u are back on the road.

as for soaking the carbie in cleaner. i used a tooth brush and some thinners and cleaned the bad boy up before i put it back together (it was caked with oil and muck) and i didnt blow out the jets and channels however i did do this recently when i had engine troubles which turned out to be non fuel related.
