Attn offroad racers, what do you do for a shifter? (Seagull this means you)
I have the poos with my shifter setup on the buggy.:cussing
What do you guys do for a shifter when ya use a kombi box?
I have a 002 (1800) box in mine if that makes any difference to it.
p.s. pics of ya setups would be great!

You need to get the grinder out for this and few machined up parts
I cut the shifter plate down in the tunnel plated it and weld it back up on a angle ,sight rise to the shift out put on the box .
The vw shift tube was removed & I made a 5/8 " solid one ( as I had bent a few shifting )>cut and welded the shifter cup on one end . The
other end I got a uni from a steering shaft *vw super bug if I recall * machined the end so it would fit over the out put shaft on the box drilled and
taped a hole ( grub screw ) in it for fixing , I cut the spline section off the shaft and welded this to the new shifter shaft so that just tightend
with the bolt for removel .
clean the weld off .
Shifter guide *
I also made a bush * nylon * this fitted into a metal bush with a C clip to hold it there .I welded that to a bit of 50 x 10 flat bar, fed the new
shifter shaft through it and fed it down the tunnel , cut a slot in the tunnel and twisted the shifter shaft so the flat bar came out the slot ( get a
magnet on a pen ), fiited the uni up >made sure it shifted ok no bind any were in the system
I them ran a weld across the flat bar to hold it the tunnel ( get a hose ) to cool it plastic melts did this bit twice !
I hope this helps
Dont forget fuel lines / tank / battery

G'day Pete,
what are you doing ??? bus box in to what a pipe buggy or a manx type buggy?
I use a jamer shifter (pic attached) but you can make your own if its a race car. If its a manx you can make a cable shifter if you can get a lathe or
you can get an alloy thing like what 11cab's got or even some different ways....

In my old class 6 custom offroad made a similar box to the one above but it was open with a solid plate at the rear and bracing on the side. we then
used a standard bettle shifter. worked well and never had any problems. ask terry to ask George C about it. It was cheap and strong

Similar to the box setup but was open and very simple. only have afew issues
1- no sping in the system, so it just falls when it wants to (ok for a race car, as its normally in gear or the car is stopped)
2- the change was complete opposite, eg 1st was back and right, 4 was fowards and left
but, you could cover it in mud, run it through water and it would neve die!!!
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!

already done something like that, only I am using a bit of beetle centre tunnel with the shift housing in it.
Problem is, the gate is really imprecise and it is hard to get into gear. It is an 1800 002 box, fully recoed.
this is the setup at the mo,
the linkage at the back is an excel steering shaft and unis, the rest is modded beetle stuff.

Hi Pete,
you already know this, but anyway.
As Graham has posted I am running 2 shifter couplings welded on top of one another to step from the kombi box down into the tunnel
Total set-up looks like this
I am then running some sort of shifter that says INDY on the side, not sure what it is.
this is the only photo I seem to have handy
Now when I first set it up it worked fine. All I had to do was adjust the reverse gate position, which is a matter of turning a screw on my
shifter.
Then last week I put a new shift bush in the tunnel. A $5 bush that is a pain in the arse to get in there. But now it's in, the whole shifter and
feel of the shift is back to new. Absolutely beautiful shifting.
A thought is maybe your gearbox is rooted, and giving you the dodgy gates. In which case spending money on a shifter won't help you any.

That bush "Wes" is talking about is the problem with what you are doing now...... you don't have one, you need to have one if you are going to run
the setup.

You could certainly be right there mr moose, if there is no bush near the shifter then the shifter would certainly be vague.
I pulled my finger out and took a pic of my shifter.

could be the bush, but there is one in there at the mo. I hope it's not the gearbox, coz that was fully recoed before it was put in the car. someone
said to me that the box might be tight coz it's newly recoed, any thoughts on that?

I got the shifter out of a wrecked beetle, so I don't actually know what Brand it is. I'm sure the stock shifter would work fine in my car too, but
haven't tried it.
