I don't reckon it is a mercenedes or even a mercedes wheel.
I'll put me money on xe or xf falcon...
Desert Bug, what did you use for the roof lining? I am thinkin of doing the same thing. I think 3mm mdf is the go.
the bus looks shit hot...David

Your right Dubnut its a falcon wheel, thats fitted to a custom tilt steering column.
The liner is MDF with fabric glued to it.

Dave if you look closely at the top pic, youll notice the speedo is a late beetle one with the fuel guage in it.

G'day All,
Thanks Rhett for posting replys.
Dave, I've used a later Beetle speedo as I didn't have a Splitty fuel gauge, so will now put a battery condition gauge in the hole with a 3 way
switch to check both batteries.
Dubnut, the roof lining is 3mm MDF as Rhett said with thin ribbed foam backed carpet glued to it (from Clark Rubber). It took a bit to get it fitting
right but the end result came up great.
The wheel is XF Falcon sitting on a modified Mitsubishi L300 Tilt column (see "Fitting tilt steering to Desert Splitty" in Tech Talk) and the VW
centre cap is a cut down mag wheel cap from a Golf.
Thanks for all the comments, we love it and it is very comfortable to Camp in.
Cheers, Ian. |
