Weber on a 2.0l motor


Have any of you Kombi people had any experience with fitting a single Weber carb onto a 2.0l aircooled motor ? I've been offered one and I wondered if it's going to be any improvment over the standard twin Solex stuff. I havn't seen it but the bloke says it has a branched manifold, and the carb sits over the top of the motor where the air filter box would ordinarily be. Does anyone know what the effect is likely to be on performance and ecomomy ? Are they straight forward to get the jetting right ? What are they worth second hand ?

these conversions frequently become available, & are quit common in the US, initially they seem attractive , but the high airspeed through the primary venturi cause frequent icing problems, the Type2.com forum in the US is full of info (& problems with this conversion) most of these conversions probably come up for sale as they gave problems for the previous owner, I have twin 32DIR webers fitted to standard manifolds , they barely cope with the freezing problems, same as when I isolated the central idling system from the standard Solexes, I beleive this is one of the real reasons for the central idling system, which bypasses the throttle butterflies

Ah, Grasshopper. The age old question! As kombikim said there is lots of info about this conversion both on this site and os sites.

I have the single weber conversion but it came with the kombi so I can't give you a comparison. The biggest weakness is the icing particularly when it's < 10 C. I hope I have addressed the icing by sticking on an air cleaner from an old mazda 323. I don't know if it's solved the problem b/c one of the rubber boots on the inlet manifold split and I'm waiting on replacements.

Thanks for the info. Yes I guess I am pretty green.
My 1600 Kombi used to get ice on the inlet manifold on its first run on a cold day. It wasn't a really big deal: it'd just refuse to run on small throttle openings, or idle. If I turned the motor off after a few miles, and parked it for a minute or two, the heat from the engine would spread up the manifold (beautiful to watch) and after that it'd be OK. Is icing a bigger problem than that with the Webers ?
