Hi Nicho
This is too broad a question. You need to be clear in what you want done.
*Respray- Bus is rubber back, minor dents filled, painted in 2K or acrylic
*Full Resto- Car Stripped(bead blasted), rust repaired, painted inside|out. New seals etc etc
And everything in between the 2 above. To give you some indication materials alone to paint a vehicle is from $1500-$2000.(Primers, fillers,
thinners, papers, paint(2K or acylic) etc etc...

Just to give you some idea.
I was quoted $8500 for a not too bad job in 2 pak, this was for inside and out, did not include putting new seals or putting it back together.
I would guess for a good job about $10K.
Thats why I bought a compressor and did it myself.
Whole paint job inside and out, cost of compressor, gun , paint, paper etc all up cost about $2000.
And I am well happy with the results

I, too, bought equipment, read books, and practiced, practiced ... and taught myself how to spray. But 5-8K isn't far from the mark for a painted
shell these days... ouch

1500-10000 depending only quality, products and how much prep work you have done your self. Once you go 2 pak you never go back.
If your a man on a budget and you do all the prep work yourself, you can get away with about just under 2k for 2 pak. This is only for the top coat
etc.

i agree
its a big job and it depends on how much you want to do to it, bad answer but the truth, i have praise for the guys who have done mine because they
have let me help to keep the costs down, the proof in the quality of the job will take time, as they are probably sick of kombis right now you might
not want to call them, but if you want to it is chinderah smash repairs, ask for marti, tell him matt sent you and also tell him that you want to
"feel the love" from the kombi when it is all done!!

I agree with Roy.
A lot of spray shops havent got the experiance to do a full respray anymore, or the time. They are now mostly bolt on outfits, they make more money on
getting the jobs out of the door faster.
I visited one place and they said they hadnt done a full respray in over 5 years????, that was a car never mind a kombi.
I saw a beetle that had been painted by a reputable shop here in Adelaide, it was an oval and he paid $4000. Upon looking closer I saw that they had
not removed the windows or taken the guards off. They had also painted over a broken door hinge, not replaced it. And there were about 6-7 runs in the
paint. they had not painted in the engine bay or under the bonnet, and they had painted over dirt under the guards.
That is why I painted my own.
A lot of places will also give you a stupid price as they dont want the work.
Also whatever the cost of the paint job, double or even triple that for rebuilding it.
It does feel good when you can see it getting closer to being finished.

You could do it for about $100 if you brushed it on, but then if that is your thing you go for it.
If someone offered me $10000 to repair and paint a kombi which has no rust in it I would still decline. You are really going to have to look hard to
find someone willing to take it on and probably invest $100 in phone calls and petrol driving around to visit some places and find the right one.
Like a Beta cassete video tape. Still around, but not easy to find.

Buy your own stuff,
I was told when I was an apprentice that the WORST thing is dust, try and make a clean makeshift spraybooth, You want a dust free environment as
possible, With a nice ammount of Heat, obviously this is hard to do on a budget, but some americans seem to do it.
Other then that, Practice on a Panel your spray pattern, I have found that Buffing and Polishing is the 2nd most important part of a job, (Yes Im
crazy)
You can make a shit job good, But when you don't buff the job well you can turn it to shit 
Hichem Make a 2K Iso Free System, which is rather quality, Without a booth it dries in 3 hours and I buffed it in 24-48 hours, Alot harder to chip
then acrylic, Just buy a suitable Respirator, some gloves (keep skin covered) and away you go.

Yes it is Glasurit 2 pak.
All 2 paks show orange peel after spraying to a certain degree, but I have colour sanded mine to get rid of it.
I used 1200 then 1500 then 2000 wet and dry and I now have a very smooth paint job.
It is ALL in the prep , anyone can paint , all you need is the right advice and practice, good materials also help, you could tell that the paint was
high quality as soon as it hit the panels.
I made my own spray booth in my old shed by hanging plastic dust sheets, bought from Bunnings for $2 each, I used about 10 of them and hung them down
the sides and over the top. I got no dust at all in the paint.
I didnt use heat and it was touch dry in 4 hours.

well to be honest I don't think "anyone" can paint, it's a tough skill to learn, if it's your first time your bound to get runs. orange peel, dry
spray.
so learn how to buff

it wasnt till i was half way through about my third paint job about 5 yrs ago ,i couldnt work out how i did the last one ,i couldnt remember how it
all flowed on to get that glassy of the gun finnish.then it came to me as i knocked down another can ,its an art form and as soon as you take it on as
one it becomes a hell of a lot easier to get the flow,,,maybe the fumes helped .. but i still take on each spray job as a new piece of art, sometimes
art has a few runs or dry spots but some times it just blows you away .............
self taught artist.
give it a go!!!!!!!!!

You guys have really depressed me. I bought a kombi 6 months ago which had just had a re-spray and it's now cracked & crazed to hell. 
I figured, ho-hum a couple of grand for a re-spray (after some saving up) at least I can pick my own colours. I little optimistic it seems.
Looks like I'll have to build a garage, turn it into a spray-shop and learn to do it myself, should only take about 5 years

There is nothing to fix it. Any new paint put on top of cracked or crazed paint will fry and crack harder and faster. All has to come off

Just been there...
I also agree with Roy earlier on in the post, finding someone with the passion is the hard part. I have just got mine back from the paint shop and am
far from impressed. Money and time were'nt the issue he kept losing interest and pushing it to the back of the shed. In turn things were forgotten
and had to be redone. In all job was sloppy and I am waiting now for the right time to take it back so he can fix up a FEW things.
I'll definately have a go myself next time. I guess it's the old saying "you get what you pay for".

I would recommend anyone to give it a go yourself.
Go to the library and look at a few books.
Also go to some local crash repairers and ask for advice, my local one was brilliant, he was a one man place and very helpful.

2k paint is not designed to be "buffed". It came about so that smash repairers could save time buy getting a 'off the gun finish'.When you sand
your color back and buff you loose around 10% of the gloss.If you prepare your panel properly and then applie the paint properly you can get no orange
peel.The trick is to to put a couple of really thin 'tack coats down first, then put a nice wet, almost running coat.Good light is essential so you
can see your paint going on.I ahve done a few weekenders and a little trick is wet the shed down ( before the car goes in).Hose it out,up the walls.if
you hose the ceiling down the day before so you dont have water falling onto your paint,but do the floor and half way up the walls just before
painting.
PS buy the time you paint a splitty in and out your going to use about $5000 in 2k primers and topcoat.

I sprayed my Beetle in a open shed. I invested 50 bux on huge clear plastic drop sheets and made basic frames for the open area and made a cheap
booth. then i used one air compressor for the spray gun and a small one to help circulate the air in the booth.
Doing the top coats i used acrylic and had about 8 coats so the bug was in there for a while and i think its one of the best jobs!. (Even if i do say
so myself) there was a tiny bit of dust on the bonnet and tiny insect on the back that we took out with tweesers whilst it was wet.
The buffing with the proper gear got out those little imperfections no probs
i actually paid a guy to do those final coats for me as it was in pearl and i wanted it to have the perfect grades/reflections of colour.
It cost me a few hundred to pay him, but he also hooked me up with the paint from a great place for a good price! he even helped out before spraying
and give me some pointers on the prep and checked it for me before we did the undercoats.
now all i need to do is find a pic to show you!
Just go to car shows and pubs and places and find someone who either loves VW's or unique cars and usually you can talk them into a few satruday
arvos worth of help for a few hundred bux.

Good point about loosing around 10% of the gloss after sanding back 2k, that's what I always thought too!
