There's a hole in my bucket dear Martha...
just carpeted the floor of my 74 kombi, and I noticed a whopping great hole in the middle of the floor (where the middle seat should be.) Looks
factory made. Bit like a spout protruding forwards and down towards the front of the car. What is this hole for?

Heating hole
your 74 kombi started life as a microbus.the hole you have found is for the heating of middle seat passengers. there should be a little hinged flap
over the vent hole that is forced open by the airflow when heating is on
Keeping it real !
