Nothing fragile about the WBXer engine,
a bit gutless maybe,
but not fragile.

I dont think they were fragile but I have heard that they corroded if you use the wrong coolant.

Plenty of info on the vanagon site.

The Viscus Coupling and Front Transfer Case are prone to a few probs if not looked after, tim you are correct when you say coolent should be used at all times, otherwise they are just fine, i have had 2 off em!

Syncro's and ute's continued with rear motor (T3) after T4 van (front motor) was released. Until '92 I think???
They came from a different factory.
