"Aftermarket" Seat Hieghts in Beetle

I fitted some Prelude (92'ish) seats to my 1302 just before Christmas- Make a huge improvement being held in there firmly.

I welded the bottom of the Prelude seat track (once I cut the slider apart) to the top of the VW seat frame. Trouble is the seat feels really high now.

I'm wondering if those of you with seats fitted from other cars could measure how far the front of the seat base sits above the floor pan of the car and let me know- Obviously it's going to depend a lot on how tall you are but it will give me a general feeling for weather I should bother cutting them off the frame and cut the frame down to make the seat sit lower. Currently it sits about 34 cm from the floor to the top front of the seat base.

Cheers

Hey its holiday time - give us a break!

I am running some sort of Subaru seat and the front pin stripeing is 30cm from the floor.
The VW base the sit on are 15cm from the floor, which means the squab is 15cm thick at the front.
I am very happy with the height (the rear of squab is adjustable) and comfort.
I still have the adjuster from the Sube on there as well as the VW one.

Seat cushion measuerment

I can't really make out what You want measured. As You are talking of a NON genuine VW seat, every other non VW seat base is going to be VERY different..
The only way I can see to measure something that is /should be -same /similar - is the Seat cushion on which You sit on.
If everyone.. well a few people measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion.. what they sit on... that is a MUCH better Measurement... Sorry, I can't help at the moment as I am installing Superbug seats into My 68 Auto Beetle & the runners have to be modified..cut out.!:o

Thanks :)

Blue 74l - the top of your cushion is about 4cm lower than mine which is about how much I wanted to lower it.

68AutoBug- yep you hit the nail on the head - that is the measurement I was looking for- sorry for the confusion

Yeah the cushions are going to be different thickneses so those people that weld their seats to the top of the original VW seat frame will get different heights- I'm just looking for the variation.

Hey the superbug seats - are they put together the same way as the earlier seats? ie metal frame base (that has the sliders on it) with the springs clipped to this then the upholstery stretched over this? If so you could see if you can just swap the metal frames base over- so the new seat effectively sits on your old seat base (and sliders)

Thanks again
Cheers

I've also got Prelude seats for my Oval. I sat a VW seat on the pan to measure the height of the front and back of the seat cushion, that way I could get the new seats at the same height as the original seats.

Height of front of cushion - 350mm
Height of back of cushion - 250mm

BTW
My engineer wont let me use the VW runners and seat frames on the Prelude seats. I have to make up new frames and secure them to the floor pan. Have you noticed that the Prelude runners don't run parallel to the seat?

56astro

I hadn't noticed the seat runners were not parallel to the seat. I had a quick look now and the runners appear to be parallel to the VW frame and approximately the correct width apart- which is more good luck than anything else:)

We have to get most mods to a vehicle certified here in NZ, but when I spoke to the engineer that does these hot rod certs he said that as long as I use the original VW tracks I could weld the seat to the frame and that would be fine and legal- I almost fell over backwards when he told me this- couldn't get the seats fitted fast enough:D (now I just have to convince the garage that does the 6 monthly road safety check!!)

doesnt it depend on how fat your arse is andhow far you squish the seat down?
