Type 4 Questions

Hi All.
1. I'd like to be able to do an oil and oil filter change on my Type 4 Kombi. Any pointers, sites ?
2. I'd like to fit some extra interior lights in the load/hatch area, and a 12 v power socket. From which fuse do I run an extra wire, and gosh, where is the fuse box ?
3. What do I have to remove in order to fit a tow bar ?
The rear bumper ? And where to splice into the wiring loom ?
4. How to change a tail light or turn indicator bulb ? At the rear, remove 3 internal nuts, then draw the assembly out from outside of the body ?
Yep, I'm pretty green about this Kombi. What handbook should I purchase ?
Thanks for your time.
Best. George.

Hey George,
Some more details man?? What model Kombi, what year, which type 4 motor etc??

As for oil, there's a plug in the middle of the case under the motor to drain oil, DON'T strip the thread putting it back in! You'll need ~3.5L of a good multigrade oil. The filter is just behind that, up high. You may need a good filter remover to get it out (Don't tighten it too tight). Be sure to fill the filter with oil before re-installing! I'd recommend a good filter from a VW supplier (Mann, Mahle etc) as elcheapo's are know to burts, type 4's sometimes get spikes in oil pressure at start up. While your at it, remove the strainer and check it's clean, and get some new gaskets for it and the drain plug to make it oil tight (their very cheap).

The wiring does vary model to model. The fuse box is under the glove compartment. Depending on what options your Kombi has (dash fans etc). As a general guide, fuse 7 goes to the dash fans, and if you don't have them/use them it will be good for accessories. Fuse 8 is used for the interior lights, so should be good for additional lights.
If you have a spare fuse position (fuse 9 depending on options), you could run power to it and use that for other things also.
Again, this depends on model, and what others have done in the past.

Most tow bars about bolt to the same mounts as the bumper. The bolts then hold both the bumper and towbar.

For rear bulbs, just remove the 3 screws in the lens, and pop the lense off to replace the bulb only. (this is for the tall lights of late bay's). There are 4 nuts to remove from the engine bay if you want to remove the whole assembly. Just be warned the light assemblies perish badly over time, so be very careful or it will crumble in your hands!!!

A few extra's while your in the mood, CHECK valve clearences (unless it has hydraulic tappets), very important on type 4 motors, replace all fuel lines and fuel filter, and check all brass tubes on the carbies and fuel pump are secure (unless you have FI), they come loose!
Oh, and a fire extinguisher is a handy addition to any VW
Good luck :beer

As for web pages, search old posts here, and there are some good archives at type2.com

Apart form Muir's Complete Idiots Guide, also buy the Bentley or other manual for your specific model. Although Muir's is a fantastic book, it doesn't cover the little idiosyncracies of each model.

Hey! That's great ! Thanks fellas.

Hmmm. 'How to keep Your Volkswagen Alive'. Is that the hippie book, from way back in the 60's or 70's ? If so, then it's good for early kombi's, but not mine.

Looks like I didn't give enough model info. Sorry.

Mine's a Type 4, build date 2003, with five cylinder petrol 2.5 litre Audi engine. Front wheel drive. I ain't touchin too much - it's still under warranty. Just wants an oil change, more lights and towbar. Still can't find the fusebox.....

Aaaaggghhh - there are so many different models now, at least 3 different wheelbases, then there's the new Type 5, with various roof heights as well.

I know a bloke you was a good friend of the author of that book. The author has since died. They were real hippie days.
Nuff said.

Andy - thanks for your help, also.

:thumb :D :thumb :D

Well, very messed up on that one!! :blush

You have a T4 Transporter (or Caravell) dude ;)

Type 1 = "beetle"
Type 2 = "Kombi"
Type 3 = "Wagon, fasty, or notch"
Type 4 = well a type 4!!

Type 2's were split up further into T1 (splitties) T2 (Bay's) T3 (wedges or vanagons) T4 (front wheel drives) etc.......

Type 4 and T2 Kombi's are often mixed together because the motor designed for the type 4 ended up being the power plant for Kombi's.
I hope your totally confused now!

So I guess the "keep your vwdub alive" book is no good to you eh.
Sorry I know nothing about them fangled watercooled thingemegiggies
Good luck though :beer

Oh, with the exception of different wheel bases, there have always been a multitude of variations in the Kombi stable, not much new there.

Andy: Thanks for trying to help. Yep, I am a bit wiser now.
So the T2 is a bay window model, but if it's a split windscreen model then it's really a T1.
So a T1 is a beetle,
And a T2 / T1 is a split Kombi. Alright.

Now the T5 has arrived. Looks like a T4 but minor differences at grille & front bumper. Plus roof height, etc, etc.

I can't keep up with the newer model changes.

Have a good weekend, mate.

No,no,no...
Type 1 and T1 are two different things dude!!!
Type 1 = beetle,
T1 = first variation of the Type 2 model range.
Now re-read previous post ;)
