Broken shift rod hanger/support

Last week I encountered a serious problem with my bug.
The bottom half of the loop in the shift rod hanger/support sheared off, letting the shift rod drop away from the base of the gearstick, thus i could not change gears.

I have recieved advice that the usual remedy is to weld it back together, but I believe that it is beyond repair.

Has anyone else had this problem?
I know i can buy a replacement part from CBperformance in the US. Apparently you need to undo the tac welds holding the current item in place in order to put in the new piece. It welds on where the base of the shifter bolts on.
See the part here: http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=706

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Steve

Steve,

There is a section in the old VW factory manuals that describes this procedure. I could send it to you?

the type 1 weld in and the type 3 bolt in from what I have been told. You can weld in a new one by drilling out the spot welds, removing the old section and then welding in a new one.

I usually just cut a hole, fix it up and weld the hole up again.
